Ft. Myers Beach, FL – Robert (Bob) Colgrove Hill, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. Born March 7, 1930 and raised in Naugatuck, CT, Bob was the son of the late Dr. William E. and Louise (Robinson) Hill, brother of the late Dr. William (Bill) E. Hill, Jr., and husband of the late Mary Catherine (McGrath) Hill.
Bob graduated from Salem School, Governor Dummer Academy and Nichols College. After college he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Germany and France. Throughout life, Bob was a true people-person. He developed many cherished, life-long friendships and befriended countless others with his outgoing, personable character and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. He embraced life, rising early each day espousing his own mantra, “We do the best we can, one day at a time.”
Bob was very active in and dedicated to numerous community and charitable organizations and endeavors, both local and national. In recognition of his long list of contributions to the community, Bob was honored by the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the Lewis A. Dibble, Sr. Award in 1999.
His role in service to the community began in 1942 as a Boy Scout Messenger for Naugatuck Civil Defense Corps. He was a member of the Y’s Men’s Club which later became the original United Way of Naugatuck. He joined the Shepard-Salem Lodge of Masons in 1956 and achieved 32nd degree Freemasonry in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Bridgeport, Lafayette Consistory. He became a Sphinx Shriner in 1968 and served as President of the Naugatuck Shrine Club. He was a member of the Naugatuck Elks Lodge 967, The American Legion Post 17, and VFW for over 50 years. He served as Director of the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce, and as President of the Kiwanis Club and the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. He served as Senior Warden of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and as Vice President of Grove Cemetery Association.
His unwavering dedication to his community also included proud service as Chairman of the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library, and mayoral appointments as Chairman of the “Parcel C” Committee and Vice-chair of the Blue Ribbon Corporation Council Study Committee.
In 1955, Bob joined John M. Sutherland Insurance, Inc., where he became Vice President. He was active in the Professional Insurance Agents Association, serving as President in 1967-68 and receiving the Agent of the Year Award in 1980. Permanently retiring to Ft. Myers Beach, FL in 2011, Bob looked forward to his daily beach walks, enthusiastically chatting with nearly everyone he’d see along the way, many of whom came to affectionately refer to him as “mayor of the beach.”
Bob is survived by his beloved children, Caroline H. (Jeff) Klein of Ft. Myers Beach, FL and Robert C. (Shinae) Hill, Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD, as well as his loving extended family.
A private ceremony will be planned for a later date, with internment at Grove Cemetery in Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a charitable or community organization of the donor’s choosing.
