Obituary

Robert Alan Leventhal, 82, of Maitland, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, surrounded by those he loved.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Bob carried with him a deep-rooted sense of Midwestern integrity and quiet resolve throughout his life. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was a proud member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a devoted Badgers fan. He later earned his law degree from the University of Florida, launching a legal career marked by both public service and professional distinction.

Bob began his legal journey as a trial attorney and special prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. In 1971, he relocated to Central Florida to serve as Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. He also proudly served six years in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG).

In 1982, Bob transitioned to private practice, eventually co-founding Leventhal & Slaughter, P.A. with his trusted colleague and close friend, Harrison “Butch” Slaughter. The firm, respected across the state for its focus on white-collar criminal defense, remained a fixture in Florida’s legal community for over 25 years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was known for his wry humor, steady presence, and generous spirit. He cherished time spent working alongside his son Rob, relaxing at the beach, skiing the slopes, golfing at the Winter Park 9, listening to Roy Orbison and Joe Cocker, and sharing a simple hot dog with friends.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn Dysart Leventhal; his son, Rob Leventhal; and his sister, Marlyn “Ginger” Fox of Chicago. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, lifelong friends, and colleagues who admired and loved him.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at The First Congregational Church of Winter Park on Friday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Bob’s memory to The First Congregational Church of Winter Park or a charity of your choice.

For Rob, In Honor of Your Dad

The courtroom's quiet, the books are still,
The man who shaped the law with skill
Has left this world—but not our hearts,
    For legacy outlives departure’s part.

    Your dad—respected, firm, and fair,
With steady voice and thoughtful care—
Was more than just a legal mind,
He was the rare, courageous kind.

He fought for right, he gave his all,
    He answered every justice call.
But more than wins or legal might,
He stood for people, truth, and right.

And Rob, in you, his heart lives on—
In how you stand, in how you’re strong.
In how you listen, lead, and strive—
He made that goodness come alive.

You carry not just grief, but flame,
    A father’s pride, a cherished name.
So when the loss feels hard to bear,
Know he’s in all you do and share.

    A great man’s gone—but never far,
His light is now your guiding star.
And through this storm, just hold this true:
So many stand in love with you.

So very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I remember the days we ran together, also meeting at Church Street Station on Wednesdays for Nickel beer night. I fondly remember a fishing trip we took the Florida Keys. Bob will be missed by all that knew him.

Lynn and Rob, Ellen and I were saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. He was a terrific guy beloved by his family and friends as well as clients and colleagues. I recall going to nickel beer night with him at Rosie O’Grady’s soon after moving to Central Florida and it’s hard to image it was 45 years ago. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and memories of Bob and his good deeds will live on eternally.
    Heartfelt condolences.
    Wayne and Ellen Wolfson

Bob was the epitome of an ethical gentleman attorney. I practiced against him in federal court, and later, as a defense lawyer, on the same side. He was a brilliant attorney, handing the most complex cases. Bob was always prepared and fun to be around. His reputation as the best criminal attorney in Orlando and beyond was well-deserved. I will miss you, my friend.

My friend Bob, can’t quite believe you are gone. We spent a lot of time in the early days running, cycling and sometimes being “hail fellows well met.” Yes we had a lot of great times together and will always remember your laugh and good nature. You certainly will be missed but definitely not forgotten. Rest in peace my friend. Jim Powers
