Obituary

Robert Matthew Thomson, 70, passed away on June 14, 2022 at Halifax Health Hospice in Edgewater, FL, after a brief illness. Bob is survived by his wife Faye, his daughter Jill (Tim) DeLong and grandson Callum of St Cloud, MN, his son Parr (Cecilia) Thomson of Nashville, TN, sisters Mary Jane Thomson Swarts and Patricia Bea (Thomson) Tersteeg, and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Dorothy (Miller) Thomson and nephew Robert Tersteeg. Bob was born in Minneapolis and moved to International Falls at an early age. He attended St Thomas Catholic School and graduated from Falls High School in 1969. He attended Rainy River Jr College and graduated from U of MN-Minneapolis with a BS in Civil Engineering. Bob had a successful career in highway/heavy construction and was a Registered Professional Engineer in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Florida.
In his free time Bob enjoyed boat rides, working on projects at the beloved Green Cabin in Northeast Bay on Rainy Lake, teaching the kids how to operate a boat and motor or lawn mower or snow blower, helping at the soccer field or hockey rink, and vacationing in Mexico and the Caribbean with Faye and the kids in the winter.
Bob and Faye relocated to Dunedin, FL in 2004 after one last cold winter in Rogers, MN. In 2019 they moved to a condo on the beach in Ponce Inlet where Bob enjoyed morning swims in the ocean, going to classic car shows to see if anybody had a ‘69 GTX, and stopping for a burger, a cold beer and some live music.
Bob will be missed by his many friends and family alike. A celebration of life lunch will take place on Saturday September 17, 2022 from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. at the Ranier Community Building, 2099 Spruce Street, Ranier, MN 56668.

    Faye and family,
I was so sad to read of Bob's passing. I considered him a good friend from our past and always enjoyed our talks. He loved his family without a doubt. He was a good person.

My family and I moved spontaneously to a Ponce Inlet from NY during the pandemic. Our then 8 yr old daughter was suddenly without her cousins and grandparents for the first time. Bob and Faye made her (and all of us) feel so loved and welcomed. She would ask daily if she could go visit them as they gave her love and snacks and made her feel at home. When they “hired” her to babysit kitty, it was the pinnacle. She told everyone she knew she had her first job and she took it so seriously. My husband got to play poker with Bob in the Thursday night game. Bob, along with the other guys, helped him decide between two great new career paths. In our short time living here, Bob and Faye became so special in our lives and hearts. We will be forever touched by their kindness and will always think of him when it’s time to go out and look at the sunset.

Bob was the best man at our wedding. And he really was the BEST! There's no comparison ...he laughed and made others laugh. Such a pragmatist (always the engineer) and yet so much fun. He made trips to the cabin an adventure. When the family included the kids - times got even better for Bob and Faye. They took everything in stride. Jill and Parr were two "small people" on a weekend trip rather than babies. Love you and miss you, Bob. Enjoy your next adventure. All my sympathy and love to Faye and family. Carol

Thinking of you Faye and the Thomson family. We enjoyed spending time with you and Bob. He was such a special guy with a big personality and a bigger heart.

Bob was one of most fun “straight shooters” we have ever known. He spoke his mind & he usually was right ! We met at a Florida sports bar ( of course) where he was rooting for BOTH the Minnesota Gophers & the Wisconsin Badgers. I knew right away he & Faye would make great friends .. & they did ! … His love of boating, the lake house & traveling to find new adventures was what he loved. We will miss him tremendously but Bobs great spirit will live on in his family! Here’s to you Bob!!
    With love Luby & Joan
