Obituary

AILES Robert Warren Ailes (LTC. Ret.), passed away at home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida on May 7, 2018 after a wonderful, exciting long-lived life. Robert (Bob) was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 15, 1921 to Howard and Kathryn Ailes. Bob spent his childhood living in Pennsylvania and graduated from John Harris High School after which he celebrated his high-school graduation at the New York World’s Fair. Bob aspired to attend Penn State University while taking classes at the McCann School of Business where he studied accounting and stenography. Bob enlisted in the Army Air Force (AAF) in 1941 when he was 19 years old and earned his sharpshooter on pistol and submachine gun, expert on carbine while he was stationed at Kearns Army Air Base in Utah. The AAF then sent him to England where he participated in the Allied Expeditionary Force – Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Bob married Ingeborg Lisa Annelore Lehman (Ingie) in Germany before continuing on with his military career as a Finance Corps Officer rising through the enlisted and officer ranks before retiring in 1970 from Fort Campbell, KY as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Bob had numerous adventures throughout his military career and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Bob and Ingie had four children, Nina-Maria Elisabeth Ailes Bert, Catherine Ingeborg (Kitty), Robert William (Bob), and Annemarie Edith Ailes Juhlin. Bob lived out his retirement at his forever home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where he maintained a world-class garden winning the Bicentennial Garden Award in 1976. Bob was active in the community, bowling on a men’s league and mixed league, served as treasurer of the PTO, and active in church where he was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church and was a founding member and treasurer of St. Peter the Fisherman. Bob and Ingie were known for hosting wonderful cocktail parties with their friends and family, serving great food and hospitality where Bob would enchant his guests with stories of the past. Bob later became caretaker of Ingie who passed away in 1999 from a long, debilitative disease. In 2000, he married Helen Maxine Dixon Buschlen whom he loved throughout his last days. Bob is survived by his wife Helen; children Nina (Richard), Kitty, Bob, and Annemarie (Rick); his step-son Curtis (Corky) Buschlen and wife Brenda; step-daughters in-law Linda and Helen Buschlen; many grand-children including Elisabeth (Lisa) Ann Bert McCaw (Andy); Natalie Laverne Bert Kennedy (Wayne); Ainsley Brooke, Lindsay Elise, and Parker Eric Juhlin; and many great-grandchildren including Olivia Elisabeth, Andrew Edward, and Colin Stuart McCaw; and Jacob William and Evan Michael Kennedy.  A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held on Friday, June 29, at 2 PM at St Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church, 4220 Saxon Drive, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169.  Burial will be in the Church’s Memorial Garden.
