Ronald was born in Grayling, Michigan along with his twin brother on August 27, 1948, to Wayne Gilmore and Maude Gilmore, nee Benjamin. Ron graduated from Gaylord High School, received an Associate of Arts Degree from Northwestern Michigan College then proudly served in the United States Navy from 1968 – 1972 as a Ship’s Cook.

Ron was a long-time resident of the U.P., first employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections in Marquette in food services. Over the years, he was the manager of the Northwoods Supper Club in Marquette, The Sea Hawk in Lansing, MI, then returning to the U.P. to work for SEMCO Energy Gas Co. Ron then came full circle and retired working for the Michigan D.O.C. in Kincheloe, MI.

After retirement, Ron volunteered to become the live-in caretaker of the Point Iroquois Light House in Chippewa County, MI. For a little over two years, he cherished his time there giving tours of the museum and the grounds to visitors while also serving as Santa’s Helper to the community.

Worked with Ron at MBP when he first moved to the UP, many years ago. Sorry to hear about his demise. He was a great soul, always great to be in conversation with. Always enjoyed his cooking, both at MBP and the Northwoods where he was a great chef.

What a positive experience it was to have worked in the MDOC while Gilly worked in the Food Service area. He had an uplifting and professional attitude toward his work.

Gilly making Monster Bars for the local shelter and reinforcing his well earned nickname, "Spilly Gilly!" The green M&M in his beard sets off his Santa look very nicely!

Dad used to help me bring food to our local homeless shelter once a month and to serve the residents. He always brought the most amazing desserts, but my favorite were Monster Bars. They were no bake peanut butter bars with a chocolate topping and many M&M's. One day, he struggled to open the bag and when it finally popped open, M&M's went everywhere! I happen to be standing nearby and when I came to see what the commotion was, I found a green M&M resting in his big old Santa Claus beard! I managed to catch him laughing while I took a picture. One of my favorite memories!

Gilly, you will be missed. We have been friends for 64 plus years. I will never forget the good times we had ridding in that old power glide pig of a Ford you and your brother had in high school. Rest in peace my friend.
