Obituary

Ruth Landis Kammer died on Thursday October 17, 2019 at the age of 94.  She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Roy O. Kammer, loving mother of Jill Bradbury (David) and Beth Kammer (Virginia Briddes), cherished grandmother of Jennifer Schweikert (Gedd) and Jonathan Bradbury (Nikki), and great grandmother of Alexander and Elizabeth Schweikert.

Born on April 16, 1925, in Berlin, PA, Ruth was one of 12 children of Anna Queer and Ralph G. Landis all of whom predeceased her.  Ruth graduated from Berlin-Brothersvalley High School and Thompson Business College.

Ruth held offices in state and local Osteopathic Auxiliaries and volunteered at the Memorial Hospital gift shop for over 25 years.  She was a board member and president of the Visiting Nurse Association and served on the board of the Children’s Growth and Development Clinic.  She tutored for the Literacy Council and was director of a tutoring program at A.D. Goode School. Ruth was a Hospice volunteer from 1982 to 2014.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1946, Ruth served as Deacon and was the third woman to become an Elder.  She taught church school and became the first female Superintendent.  In 1987, she was in the first class of Stephen Ministers.  In 1985, Ruth and Margie Gladding helped organize the Caring Company, as part of the First Presbyterian Church’s mission.  In 2014, the Session of the church honored Ruth by designating the food pantry, a part of the Caring Company, as the Ruth Kammer Food Pantry.

Ruth was the author of Inside West Side: A Prelude to Memorial Hospital published in 1985.  It was a history of the founding of the West Side Osteopathic Hospital in York.

An amazing person, petite but adventurous, Ruth touched thousands of all ages with unconditional love, grace and selfless service.  She helped make this world a better place and will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of York on Saturday, November 16 at 11am with a reception following.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Ruth Kammer Food Pantry, First Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Market St., York, PA 17403.
