Samuel Jefferson Hughes Jr (known as Sammy), 84, of Fort Myers, went with the Lord on November 26, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Samuel was born September 04, 1937, in Arlington, Virginia. Devoted son of Samuel Jefferson Hughes, Sr., and Dorothy (Ransdell) Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his cherished sister Dorothy Frances McBrearty and second wife Edna M Hughes.
Sammy was a Falls Church High School graduate in Falls Church, Virginia. He later became a school bus driver for the same school. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, where he served his country overseas as a Military policeman.
Sammy, a retired postal employee of 28 years, was a native of Northern Virginia before relocating to Florida in 1994. Samuel was a Master Mason and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason for 27 years. Sammy loved to have fun and clown around with children of all ages as a Shriner Clown for 27 years; he had the registered trademark name of “Zip Code™and his zip code is I-O-U 1-2-Hugs™, which is also registered.
Having handmade costumes made by his lovely wife Betsy, he entered many Shriner Clown competitions and was known for his fancy balloon-making abilities. He loved participating in the Shriner parades and visiting and helping the children in the Shriner Hospital. Samuel was active in Florida Shrine Clown Association, for which he served as President and Vice President. Additionally, he was president and Vice President of Araba Shrine Clowns.
During his later years of life, when asked “how he was feeling? “the answer was always a quick “With my hands” accompanied by a big grin.
He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could. Samuel is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years Betsy Hughes of Fort Myers, FL. Daughters Catherine “Kitty” Hughes of Fort Myers, FL, Wendi RaeNell McIntosh (William) of Ocala, FL, Angela Marie Laubhan of Fruita, CO, Angela Lynn Ortiz (Jose) of Chester, VA, stepdaughters Shirley Snyder McLaren (Steve) of Fort Myers, FL, and Kara O’ Bannon (Calvin) of Labelle, FL; fourteen grandchildren; Jaclyn, Jesika, Robin, Andrew, Steven, Kristopher, Monique, Precious, Thomas, Marcus, Laviana, Jose Jr, Brytani, Phillip twenty-nine great-grandchildren Lylia, Anthony, Easton, Mariah, Aiden, Rylan, Gabriella, Jason, Jonathan, Emma, William, Samuel, Brice, Yolanda, Yoel, Aaron, Damien, Venny, Santi, Enzo, Josiah, Layla, Gabriel, Kahlan, Ashlynn and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
