Samuel Kirby, PhD., a retired teacher, died November 17, 2018, at the age of 83. Dr. Rogers was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, Stetson University, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Florida State University. He moved to Volusia County in 1986 where he taught elementary school in Edgewater, FL for 24 years. Dr Rogers was an avid reader and accomplished writer. His novel, Operation Dewey, received the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries in 1991 and was published in 2002. Dr Rogers loved the outdoors and working with plants and pets. He served as Minister of Music in various churches throughout his adult life and was currently an active member of Westminster By-The-Sea Presbyterian Church in Daytona Beach Shores.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Evelyn Parker Rogers; daughter, Kimberly Miles (Mark) of Seneca, SC; a son, Brian Rogers (Jamie) of Longwood; a sister, Emmie Eleta Reese of Eau Claire, WI; and three grandchildren, John Michael Miles, Allison Miles, and Christian Rogers. He is predeceased by his brothers, John Woodall Rogers, Jr. and William Judson Rogers.
A funeral service will be held at Westminster By-The-Sea Presbyterian Church, 3221 South Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach Shores, FL 32118 on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 1 PM. A brief reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church, and Interment will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens in Edgewater, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Arnold Palmer Center Foundation, 316 Southgate Commerce Bldg., Suite 50, Orlando, FL 32806; Westminster By-The-Sea Presbyterian Church, or to Florida Hospital Hospice Care, 770 West Granada Blvd., Suite 304, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
