Obituary

Sandra Theresa (Hon) Bierly, 70, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Sandy was born on April 17, 1952, in Duluth, Minnesota.  She was the middle of five children of Edward and Alta Mae (Johnson) Hon.  Beginning at an early age, Sandy’s Catholic faith was an important part of her life.  She was a 1970 graduate of Bishop Hartley High School, in Columbus, Ohio, where she made cherished, life-long friends.

Sandy was the devoted wife of 52 years to her husband, Michael.  Their life together, from age 18, was one big adventure.  Sandy’s positive outlook (“Where there’s a will, there’s a way”) and love of life, helped take them places far and wide together.  Sandy’s zest for life often made Michael’s head spin, but he could never quite (successfully) tell her no, and is one of the many reasons why he loved her so incredibly much.

She and Michael owned a real estate company in Columbus, where they started a family before moving to Florida in 1984 where their youngest son born.  Sandy worked hard raising her family and pursuing her career.  Her competitive nature was far reaching.  As a woman in real estate in the 80’s and 90’s, she broke glass ceilings, making a name for herself as a well-respected real estate broker and land developer.  Her passion for real estate was unparalleled.  Sandy and her partner, Carl Cahill, developed over a dozen quality residential neighborhoods throughout the Central Florida area from 1989 to 2007.

Sandy was a wonderful, loving, supportive mother who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, playing golf and tennis, and rooting for her Minnesota Vikings and Ohio State Buckeyes.  The Hon family cabin on Bear Island Lake in Minnesota was a very special place for Sandy her entire life.  She spent her childhood playing and swimming with her siblings and cousins, and subsequently watched her children play and swim with their siblings and cousins every chance they had.

Sandy is survived by her husband, John Michael; son John Michael (Jr.); daughter Jennifer Hon, daughter Michelle Marie and husband James Farthing, son Steven Edward and wife Kathryn (Hagen); grandsons Mason and Dylan Farthing, granddaughters Julie Mae and Evey Marie; brother Gregory Hon and his wife Kathy, sister Cindy (Hon) and her husband Steve Gramm, brother Steven Hon and his wife Laura, and brother Edward Hon and his wife Alece, along with many, many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.  Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Alta Mae, ‘Auntie’ Evelyn, sister-in-law Mary Eva (Bierly) Walters and (her oldest) beautiful daughter, Julie (b.1976/d.1993).

The Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Sandy’s life will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, located at, 4000 S Atlantic Ave, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169 on Friday, November 4th, at 11am. Immediately following, we will be gathering at The Grille at Riverview, located at, 101 Flagler Ave, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169, to share stories, laughs and tears.  Sandy will be laid to rest privately at a later date.

Sandy and I were "soccer moms" for many years with our boys remaining friends to this day. I spoke with her in August when Geoff was visiting me from Ecuador. I had no idea she was so ill. Total shock. Such a kind woman. When Bob (husband) passed a year ago Sandy was one of the first to call. When I heard her voice I cried like a baby. Just her voice comforted me like I was wrapped in a blanket. We recalled all the years from boys of around 7 to now 47 and life in general. Lots of laughter and too many tears. What a loss to the family and all who knew her. I have no doubt she is now with Julie!
