Obituary

On May 27th, 1962 Sandra “Sandy” Marie Gosnell was born to Dallas Gosnell and Gloria Panone. She grew up with her 5 siblings (Linda, Barbra, David, Patricia, and Suzanne) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended Penn Hills High School where she made lifelong friends with Erin, Lucy, and Jayne. She graduated with the class of 1980 and attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania in the fall. During her sophomore year, she met the love of her life, Craig M. Smith. She knew early on that this was the man she was going to marry, even if it took Craig a little longer to see what was right in front of him. On May 17th, 1986 they were surrounded by family and friends as they made their lifelong commitment to love and cherish one another. Craig got a job opportunity down in Fort Myers, Florida and the couple put down roots in 1987. In May of 1991 Sandy gave birth to their son, Andrew Malcolm Smith. A few years later in November of 1993, Sandy gave birth to their daughter, Katherine Marie Smith. Sandy spent much of her career managing non-profit organizations. She spent a great deal of time working for the MDA, Goodwill, and the United Way. Sandy even spent some time in the motorcycle world of Harley-Davidson, but never wanted to ride one. Anyone who met Sandy knew she had such a huge heart and had a genuine love for helping others. Her laughter was infectious, and her smile could light up a room. She never knew a stranger as she made friends with every soul she met. On April 16th, 2021 Sandy suddenly passed away a month before her 59th birthday. She is proceeded in death by her mother, Gloria. She is survived by her father Dallas, her husband Craig, her two children Andrew and Katie, her siblings Linda, Barbra, David, Patricia, and Suzanne, along with dozens of nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 1:30 p.m. at Baldwin Brothers, 4320 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers.

What a tragic loss this is! Sandy was a kind and fun person who raised the spirits of everyone around her. She was a very loving wife and mother and my prayers are especially with Craig, Katie and Andrew. As a first cousin of Craig I met her in may 1986 at their wedding in Pittsburg. She made me feel welcomed to her home and family even in the midst of her own wedding. Again I felt a bond and enjoyed spending a few days with her and “the crew” at the funeral of Beth Wheeler Smith in 2013.
Love is a special bond that we share and it continues even after we lose a loved one physically. Sandy spread love to her friends and family, and worked to help others everyday at her job. Her love footprints on the world are numerous! We will not forget her! (Posting photos as well)
Sending love from the Wheeler side of the family. Let’s stay in touch and make new memories as we keep the old memories alive.

I was so lucky to meet Sandy freshman year, and I have many stories filled with laughter and tears (yes, there was some crying involved). She cared deeply, loved deeply, and was definitely the nurturer of the group. I'm a better person today because of her. I will miss her deeply. Craig you were and always will be the 5th roomie, and I know how much she adored you since she was 19. Andrew and Katie your mom was a force to be reckoned with - smart, witty, and a good friend. I wish I could be there on Saturday, however, I'll honor her by putting on some Joni and think about all of the good times we had together. I send my love and prayers to you all.
