Obituary

Shannon Leigh Trebbe, CAPT USN (ret.), of New Smyrna Beach passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 91 on March 4, 2021 after a short illness. Born in Baker, Oregon, Shannon was the son of a banker and a proud University of Oregon “Duck.” After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan, where he met his first wife, Sally Kraft, a teacher. In addition to his career duties as a pilot, Shannon served as navigator on the USS Hancock and was deployed to Vietnam. Shannon retired after a final tour of duty serving on the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. His first marriage ended, and he married Barbara Coverdale, a bank employee. They moved to Florida, where in post-retirement, Shannon taught at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach before retiring again. In addition to his favorite pastimes of traveling and flying, Shannon enjoyed playing golf, reading spy novels and singing in his church choir. After his second marriage ended, he met and married Pauline Morian Smith, a former teacher in the Volusia County Public School District. Pauline passed away on Feb. 27; Shannon followed five days later. Shannon is survived by two children — Ann Trebbe Oldenburg of Ocean View, Delaware, and Peter Barrett Trebbe of Friendship, Maine — along with seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Shannon’s oldest child, Timothy Shannon Trebbe, predeceased him. Because of Shannon’s love of the sky and the water, his remains will be scattered at sea. No memorial service is planned.
