My father was what the Navy calls a Plank Owner, meaning he was a member of a ship's first crew. It is a big deal to help commission a Navy vessel and I am pretty sure dad did it for at least two ships. This is his certificate for the U.S.S. Grapple. He spent weeks in Wisconsin, assisting in the submarine tender's launch. I went to visit and spent a week with dad in Sturgeon Bay. It was a blast. I got to tour the ship, we went to a fish boil, we drove all around the peninsula and I got to see a part of the country I had never seen before. My father always ignited in me a deep curisorty about the world and a sense of adventure. I remember when I was a very young kid-7 or 8-dad had purchased a set encyclopedias for the house. I remember laying in the hallway and reading those books from cover to cover and later talking to dad about what I had discovered. Thank you, dad, for all your inspiration.
Mom and Uncle Shaun are together again in heaven. RIP Uncle Shaun. You are a great guy, may our memories of you and with you live for all eternity.
