Obituary

Sheldon A. “Dutch” Schultz, 83, left this world peacefully February 20, 2022, after a brief battle with a fast-spreading lymphoma, confirmed after his passing. He was comforted by the love and support of the angels on the 3rd floor at Advent Ormond Beach, Nurse Arlene, and tech Connie, Halifax Hospice, his daughter, and his wife.

Nicknamed Dutch by a friend after the famous gangster “Dutch Schultz,” our Dutch never lived up to the criminal hype. Instead, he lived a life of service, beginning with military policing in the armed forces, and 40 plus years in law enforcement. After retiring and moving back to the Daytona area, his wife encouraged him to get involved in the community Homeowners Association.

Dutch joined the Daytona Beach Police Department in 1963, earning multiple commendations and promotions during his 27-year career with the department, where he retired as Captain in 1990. He was most proud of two notable accomplishments, graduating from the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA in June 1978, and starting the DBPD K-9 unit in 1981. Throughout his career he was known to be honest, up front, and dedicated; his intentions and integrity were unquestionable. Upon retirement from DBPD, Dutch accepted a position with Crescent City Police Department, FL as Chief of Police, serving that community for 11 years before retiring and hanging the badge up for good.

Dutch is survived by his wife of 32 years Diane, daughter Kelly Schultz Stephan, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and an extensive list of his in-law family whom he loved dearly.

Though he touched many lives during his time here, his world truly was his wife and his dog Mollie, thankfully in that order. Dutch and Diane shared a love that was as devoted, tender, and strong at the end, as it was at the beginning. Dutch and Mollie were the ever-vigilant neighborhood watch team in the community, and now Mollie can be seen taking the Mrs. on patrol. Dutch was past president and served on the Trails South Forty Homeowners Association Board up until his passing.

Dutch held a passion for working out and earned several powerlifting world records. He was an avid dog lover, training and titling multiple dogs in AKC competition events. He enjoyed coaching youth football in the 70’s and continued his love of teaching and coaching with anyone who asked for his help in all aspects of his life. Dutch enjoyed music, which included playing the guitar and keyboard, reading, watching college and pro football, and the bi-weekly breakfast gatherings with the Daytona Beach Retired Police & Firefighters.

Come Celebrate Dutch, Saturday, April 30 from 3-6pm, Sharing Stories and Memories at 3:30pm at the Trails South Forty Clubhouse, 75 South Forty Trail, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.

In lieu of flowers, please pray that the Gators have a winning season, and/or send a donation to Belgian Tervuren Rescue in Dutch’s name. https://www.belgiantervurenrescue.com/

Think many dog folks loved Dutch, and Diane. He and Diane shared something many of us wished we had. Dutch was a gentleman, raconteur and affable sportsman. He was knowledgeable on so many fronts. His joy at seeing dogs that he and Diane had bred or co bred was instantaneous. He, Diane and Sharon Redmer bred my all time favorite dog. Twice at different shows, he didn't go often, he would look for P.D. When he found us, he always asked if he could see him, P.D. always responded with gay abandon, The last time, he asked me when I was going to teach this dog to track. Not having tracked before, he gave me a fast tuitorial. Sadly, we never did track. Maybe he can track P.D. in heaven, for I sincerely believe that is where they are. Some holes in your heart cannot be filled... which I think is good, for then those loved ones are always with us. Godspeed Dutch. until we meet again.... With love, hugs and prayers to DIane.......

    Grandpa,
In a way I wish I was there to see you one last time but, I'm glad I wasn't because I didn't want sadness to be my last memory with you. Instead, I will cherish our last conversation we had about 2.5 weeks ago when we were both laughing and talking about who we wanted in the Super Bowl. I love you grandpa and I'm sorry I didn't express or show it too often because of life getting in the way, that guilt is what I have to live with. I pray that you are truly at peace and tossing the football with Uncle Mike, I carry your heart- I carry it in mine...
Rest in sleep until we see each other again. I love you.

    Daddy,
I can't believe you are gone. My heart is broken, I will miss you each and every day. My Sunday calls to you, talking football, talking about Molly and Diane.
I am heart broken that I was not able to see you over the past couple of years due to the pandemic.
My family is all gone now, you left just me. I know Diane is heart broken but, I know she has great memories of your life together.
You are forever in my heart with Mike and mom.
    Rest in peace daddy.
