Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stefan Basinski, 66, on October 1st, 2020, at Hope Hospice House in Lehigh Acres, FL after an eight-year battle with cancer.

Stefan was born on January 18, 1954, in Oxford, England to Zbigniew Stanislaw Basinski and Sylvia Joy Pugh.

He was educated at Cambridge University, and lived in Ottawa, Canada until 2001. In 2001, he moved to Pennsylvania, USA to marry Sylvie, the love of his life and became a US Citizen.   He worked for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange as a senior computer software engineer from 2001-2017 and when the Philadelphia Exchange merged with the NASDAQ stock exchange, Stefan’s software development team was tasked with rewriting the computer code that processed stock purchases and sales.   He engineered software that could accurately and securely process more than one million stock transactions per second!

Stefan and his wife Sylvie retired and moved to Pelican Preserve in Fort Myers, Florida in 2017. Stefan’s intellect and natural curiosity benefited him not only at work, but in his personal life as well. He was an expert bridge player and he was an active member of our Pelican Preserve community where he took joy in playing in our monthly Trivia games, serving on the Sevilla HOA Board, and cheering on our tennis teams during many of their matches. His passions included photography, playing bridge, cooking and fine dining, board games, music, Sodoku, technology and latest gadgets – including home automation solutions.

Stefan was a dedicated friend, loving husband, father and grandfather, and gifted storyteller.

He is survived by his wife Sylvie, daughters Laura and Diana, stepsons Greg and Kostia, brother Toni, and four grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his optimism, intellect, and mostly for his deep love for his family and friends.

His final resting place will be in Dommartin, France.

The family of Stefan invites you to leave a message of condolence at the Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home website. Visitation and funeral services will be by invitation of the family.

Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, Fort Myers, assisted with arrangements.

    Dear all

We met Stefan when I was a student at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge in 1974. We talked, we played bridge, we partied - he was great fun. As a wedding present, he took and, most importantly, paid for the photographs at our wedding. We have thought and talked of him often. We are sad to hear of his passing but he does leave behind some very happy memories.

    Love

    Leon Walker and Alice Hurley

I remember meeting Stefan at the Pelican Preserve resort pool a number of years ago where he was sitting with Sylvie, who I knew from the Pelican Preserve tennis courts. I enjoyed playing bridge with Stefan very much but it wasn't quite as enjoyable playing against him as his knowledge and expertise at playing the game was extraordinary. I will remember him as a very smart, quiet and gentle man who was a pleasure knowing. My sympathy and prayers to Sylvie and family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Stefan was one of the kindest persons I know. He will be truly missed especially at Trivia to answer those difficult questions. I will miss his compliments on my baking skills. I know this last year has been difficult. Know that you can call on me for help or a crying shoulder.

The Pugh branch of Stefan’s family are very sad at his loss.
We did not see as much of Stefan as we would have liked to in recent times, due to distance, but we have strong memories of a warm and kind man.
We send our condolences to Sylvie and the rest of Stefan’s family, and to Toni and his family in this difficult time.

Bob & I are so happy that we got to know both Stefan & Sylvie, even though for such a brief time. Our love of bridge brought us together, but their kindness kept us close. Stef and I shared many rides back & forth to the bridge center, and I was blessed to see what a great and gentle man he was. Stef was always very open about his condition, his treatment and how he was dealing with it, but he never complained. I will miss him, his wit and his intellect. I am happy that he is now at peace and resting comfortably in Our Saviour's Arms. Prayers will continue for both Stef & Sylvie.

Stefan, I was so happy for Sylvie when the two of you found each other. The joy that you two shared together was so wonderful to see. I always enjoyed spending with you at the bridge table and in the post mortems over a good meal and good spirits.

Stefan, you were a great story teller, great bridge player, and most importantly a great friend. I will continue remembering many stories that we have shared. Our group of friends won't forget to remind Sylvie of some of these stories in your absence. May there always be a seat open at the bridge club of heaven. Hopefully, they won't put you in so many bad contracts up there.

Both Don and I are so very sorry for the loss of dear Stefan. He was a remarkable person in all his endeavors and his extreme kindness radiated to all who knew him! Dear Stef, thanks for all the memories. Your friendship was a joy to me (and my dog Tucker that you loved so much).
I promise to comfort Sylvie and always be there for her. She will be blessed abundantly for the love and care she gave you throughout your marriage and in particular, during the past year. She has been a gift from God for you and for me.
I am so happy you are resting in peace. I look forward to seeing you on the other side. ❤️❤️ Jeanette

You were an amazing bridge player and I so enjoyed playing music selections sometimes at your table. I was Mr DJ and you were always so kind and pleasant in our banners at the table. I so wish I could have met you in person. You will be missed and hugs to Sylvie too. She was a real trooper in your care. She deserves a hero award! May the good Lord shine his light in this sad season. Blessings to all the family.
