Obituary

Stephen Michael Flanagan was born on May 15, 1972 in Kenner, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans.  Stephen passed away suddenly at home on Monday, April 18, 2022, with his wife and son, Steve, by his side in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Stephen grew up in New Orleans/Kenner/Metairie area and was an avid fan of anything Louisiana, but particularly LSU Tigers and New Orleans Saints.  He was a Saints fan through and through – even when they were called the “Aints” and always supported them no matter what.  His passion was LSU College football.  He lived and breathed LSU and was so proud that Louisiana was his “home” state.   He loved all sports and fishing.  He had wonderful memories of fishing with his boys, his nieces & nephews, and his godson.  He was an avid “gamer” – whether it be on his phone, his computer or one of his many gaming systems.  He was a gentle giant on the inside and most times, “one of the kids”.  He cherished his wife, sons, his nieces & nephews, his brothers & sisters, his friends, his godson, his grandchildren and his “Lori”.  He could be found on any given day playing a game with a friend or one of the family and it was his happy place.  His heart longed to be in the North Carolina mountains that he loved so much.

Stephen was a man like no other man you’ve ever known – he was so handsome with his beautiful black hair (which later faded away), his gorgeous long grey beard (of which he was so proud) and big green eyes.  He was a straight shooter (both literally and figuratively), very intelligent, an amazing sense of humor & could make everyone laugh at any time.  He had a sharp, quick wit and colorful vocabulary when the situation called for it, but you always knew he was telling you the truth.  He loved animals – any animal but his heart was with dogs.  He was always asking if we could bring in another dog that needed a home…and we did, many times.  His dogs are missing him sorely right now.  He and his wife were the “loves of each other’s lives” and talked about this often, right up until the last week of his precious life.  He was an amazing husband who worked every day to show his wife how much he loved her and do whatever he could to spoil her daily.  And he did!

He is survived by his loving wife: Susan (Suzi) Flanagan, his sons: Stephen Thomas and Derrick Michael and his “bonus” son: Ethan Daniel Heacock.  He is also survived by his parents: Ed & Yvonne Freitag of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Lawrence and Francis Flanagan of Mandeville, Louisiana; his siblings all living: brothers – Michael Flanagan, Larry (AnnMarie) Flanagan; and sisters, Rachael Flanagan (Dennis Baker) & Ashley Flanagan (Mike Ogletree), Russell (Amy) Arthur, Steven (Angela) Arthur, Kevin (Helena) Arthur, Eddie (Margo) Freitag, Troy (Shelah) Freitag-Shaw; grandchildren: Grayson Ray Flanagan, Teagan Lane Flanagan, Jackson Thomas Flanagan, Everett Villechalance, and Haven Marie Flanagan; godson- Gavin Flanagan; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews that he loved each one so dearly.  And last but certainly not least- his 3 beautiful fur babies that he adored: Gunner, Ada, and Clancy Mae.

Life Celebration will be Saturday, April 23 from 3 to 5PM at Baldwin Brothers Heritage Place 1 North Causeway New Smyrna Beach.

It was evident through talking to Susan that Stephen and Susan had a very special love story and loved each other very much. I know this is a huge loss Susan. I am so sorry and wish life didn't also have death. I pray for comfort and peace through your days of the "new normals" to come. I am grateful that you have a wonderful support system at home and your work folks are here as well. We love you.

Suzi, Steve, Derrick, Ethan and the rest of the family, my thoughts and my prayers are with you all. This is such a huge loss, and still so hard to believe that we lost him. He was a wonderful addition to our family. Heaven gained a special angel with this one, and knowing Stephen, he will liven things up! I pray you can all find some peace in knowing that you will see him again someday. We love Stephen so much, and we will miss him until we meet again. I love you all.
