Steven M Betcher Sr. Bradenton, FL passed away peacefully June 24, 2021. Born on June 5, 1955 in Kearny, NJ to Dorothy and Myles Betcher, dad was a man of few words unless of course it was a witty dad joke that he often couldn’t even muster the punch line because he found it too humorous.
He was the proud father to two daughters and a son. Dad chose us girls and chose to be our dad. A good man can step up and take care of his stepchildren, a great man makes them forget that they are his stepchildren and loves them endlessly. Steven Jr. the light of his life, made being a dad that much better someone who would fix cars, race cars, ride motorcycles just like his dad.
Dad worked as a skilled mechanic for his entire career, working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, Co. for many years before venturing out on his own. He owned his own repair shop for a couple of years before returning back to corporate owned repair shops before deciding to retire.
Dad retired in 2020 and moved to Florida shortly before his diagnosis in February 2021, his dream was to retire and move to Florida to enjoy the beautiful weather year round. He loved to fish and search for his buried treasures on the beach. And he chose such beautiful beaches to do this on. This June was my first ever visit to west coast of Florida and now I know why he chose Bradenton, it’s a short drive to Sarasota and an equally short drive to Anna Maria Island. I took a breather while dad was in the hospital to enjoy both beaches one at sunset and the other mid day and they were both breathtaking. I can’t wait to return with my son to show him why his grandpa was so happy
In Dads final days he was surrounded by the people who loved him most. Both Steven and I were able to see him and speak with him. All of his brothers and sisters along with their spouses were in Florida and had time to spend with him before he passed. Our grandmother was able to see him and be with him in his final days and takes great peace in this.
Dad was preceded in death By his father Myles A Betcher and eldest daughter April Lynn Irizarry. He is survived by his daughter JudyAnne and her partner Keith (Miller Place, NY) and his son Steven Jr. (Coram, NY). Grandchildren Julianna Marie and Paul Edward. He’s is also survived by his mother Dorothy Betcher (Bradenton, FL), Catherine Trentzsch and his brother in-law Frank (Bradenton, FL) , His sister Janice McDonnell and brother in-law Tommy (Easton, MD) and his youngest brother Thomas Betcher and sister in-law Sharon (Islip, NY), his 4 nephews, 4 neices and their partners, spouses and children. And countless friends and family from near and far.
I can only pray that he’s at peace and resting easy. I know he felt our love not just in his final days but always. Dad was bigger that life and will be missed everyday.
Memorial Services will be held in New York.
