Obituary

Susan Nightingale (nee deCourcy), age 75, passed away on January 30, 2022 in The Villages, Florida after a long struggle with cancer. Susan is survived by her husband of 55 years, John Nightingale, four children William John Nightingale of Hedgesville, West Virginia, Kimberly Ann Huddy of Waco, Texas, Patricia Lynn Strait of Newport News, Virginia, and John Christopher Nightingale of Yorktown, Virginia sister-in-law Ann deCourcy (nee Thompson) and nieces Amanda Wilson and Ruby Alston of Felixstowe England.  Susan was also the grandmother to 14 grandchildren and great grandmother to 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fredrick William and Lena Sybil (nee Dansie) deCourcy, and brothers Timothy deCourcy and Noel Alston. Susan was born on May 23, 1946 in Long Melford, Suffolk, England and moved to the United States at the age of two to reside in Weymouth Massachusetts where she met and married her husband John in 1966.

Susan spent 17 years as a teacher in early childhood education with the Head Start Program before retiring to help care for her grandchildren.  Her family and friends will always remember her as fiercely independent and will be remembered for her boundless compassion and joy of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital for Children, or Shriners Hospitals for Children.

    Auntie Susan I remember how close we were when I was a little girl. I could talk to you about anything that was going on in my life. You were so loving and understanding. My favorite times were spent at your house or camping with my cousins. I miss you dearly. I love you.
