Obituary

Suzan Gail Mergel ,71, of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away in the loving company of family and friends on January 4th, 2020. Suzie (“Suzie with a Z” as she would say) was born on May 8th, 1948 in Jersey City, NJ to Rosemarie and Robert Mergel. She spent most of her childhood in Holmdel, NJ and graduated from Freehold High School. After graduating high school Suzie moved to New Hope, PA and pursued artistic passions such as sculpting, stained glass, and fashion. She displayed her design talents working as a window designer for department stores. In the mid 70’s she moved to Ormond Beach where she met and soon after married Warren Gilbert and they welcomed daughter Rosie Gilbert.
Working for Budweiser several years, Suzie traveled to local establishments maintaining beer lines until the early 90s. She made a lot of friends and connections, becoming well known as “Budweiser Suzie”.
During that time, she bought a restaurant and bar “The Station” which she built into a thriving business. This was her true passion and she made deep personal connections with her customers and employees.
In year 2000, after the birth of her grandson Austin, whom she adored; she retired from the restaurant business and stayed home caring for him for 3 years. In 2005 she started working as a commercial parts delivery professional which she maintained until Dec 16, 2019. As with everything in her life, she threw herself into this position making each and every one of her co-workers and customers feel like family. Suzie was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer on December 17th, 2019. She decided to seek comfort and be surrounded by loved ones in her final days. Suzie was a strong energetic spirt who lived life with zest, passion and laughter. She was a devoted Mother and Grandmother and was loved by everyone she met. Her spirit, laughter, and energy will not soon be forgotten. Left to cherish her beautiful soul is her daughter, Rosie Gilbert; brother, John Hogan; grandson, Austin Gilbert; sister in law, Kathy Mergel; Nephew Gregory Mergel; and several cousins. A celebration of life will be held in honor of Suzie on Sunday, February 9th from 2 – 5 pm in the Crystal Ballroom at Sunset Harbor, 861 Ballough Road, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.

Suzie, I had the pleasure of meeting you a couple of times while visiting my daughter Sarah. You were so very special to Sarah and have left quiet an impact on her life. She loved you dearly.
