Obituary

Virginia Montgomery Allen, 79, of Oak Hill, FL passed away on October 7, 2023. She was born in Oak Hill to the late Thaddeus James and Ruby Mae Montgomery. After graduating from Berry College in Rome, GA, Virginia met and married her loving husband, John A. Allen, in 1967. They built their family home in Oak Hill and became valued members of the community.

Mrs. Allen was a dedicated 4th & 5th grade teacher for 42 years. Honored as “Teacher of the Year” and a member of ADK, her impact on students, parents, and the administration was immeasurable. She believed in growing the community through education, the Christian faith, service to others, and leadership. In addition to teaching, she loved gardening, playing the piano at First Baptist Oak Hill, and entertaining her beloved granddaughter, Isabelle.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, John A. Allen; their two daughters, Jennifer Allen Sorese (Serge) of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Courtney Allen (Brian) of Alamosa, Colorado; her cherished granddaughter, Isabelle Sorese; her sister, Maxine Watson; and her niece, Marcella Taylor and nephew, Morris Hallum. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Arlene Hallum.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held on November 4, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Oak Hill, 192 E. Halifax Ave, with Pastor Joel Kobosh presiding.  A fellowship brunch at the church will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to create a scholarship fund in Virginia Allen’s name at Burns Sci-Tech Elementary (formerly W.F. Burns Oak Hill Elementary), where Mrs. Allen taught for 36 years. For more information, contact Jennifer Allen Sorese at jasorese@gmail.com

Please join the family in celebrating the life of Virginia Allen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. Her kindness, faith, and dedication will forever be remembered and cherished.

I really wish I had met you but I am so glad I got to speak to you on the phone... you were my dad's first love. I wish you had married him and not been selfish and given up your precious angel of a daughter even if it had meant I wouldn't exist.

I have so many wonderful memories of Virginia from Burns- Oak Hill Elementary and the moments we all shared through the bond our group had. She made me laugh so hard and was a comfort to be around. I always looked forward to visiting with her and hearing her tell stories. She loved her family more than anything and always talked about them wanting Jennifer and Courtney to have a life of happiness. Becoming a grandmother brought Virginia so much joy.
She was a very special friend and will be fondly remembered by the many lives she touched over the years.
