Beth and I were extremely saddened by the news of Walt's passing. As a friend and a mentor Walt was a person that was always helpful, and caring. I first met Walt in 1970 when he started as Head of the Pomology Department at Cornell, Geneva. Although I was just a post doc at the time Walt took me under his wing immediately, maybe because we were connected at the hip as graduates of DVC! We went to the 1970 ASHS meeting and Walt introduced me to all the big-shots in ASHS. I thought Walt knew everyone in the Society; for sure everyone loved him. We had numerous DVC reunions in Gainesville, Lake Alfred and at ASHS meetings over the years. Walt was always the center point of making these reunions meaningful and memorable. We were all extremely fortunate when he came to Florida as Director at CREC. As good fortunes have it, I got to work directly with Walt as administrators and friends until his retirement. God makes no better person than Walt Kender.

Really sorry to learn of Walt’s passing. He was a good friend and a wonderful and caring person. He served as director of CREC for many of my early years at the station. He was always very supportive of me and my program. On my 50th birthday, which coincided with his stepping down as director, he sent me an original drawing of a bird labeled: “To a Rare Bird from a Lame Duck”. Still have that. I have fond memories of those years at CREC and of Walt’s service as director. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to the family from me and Nancy.

To Walt's family: On behalf of Eileen and I, please accept our condolences on Walt's passing. A very sad moment. When Walt came from Cornell University to the University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center to be our director, we soon knew that a good person was our new leader. Walt brought experience in working with a research facility our size. We soon learned that he was a supportive administrator and always on the lookout to protect the interests of our Center. He also brought a convivial manner and was an easy person to connect with regardless of your position at the Center. I enjoyed my time with Walt both as my director and as a friend. I'm grateful for those moments. Our best wishes on your new journey. May it be filled with fond memories. Peace.
