He graduated from Somerville High School.  After graduation he joined the Coast Guard where he served for three years.  William traveled to the North Pole on an ice breaker Eastwind with Admiral Byrd’s expedition to establish a base at Thule, Greenland.  After his discharge, he married Janice (Sterner) Baird, his wife of 59 years.  They adopted three children; son, Scott of Edgewater; daughter, Doctor Melissa Baird of Springfield Oregon; son, Steven Baird of Charleston, Maine.  William was a maintenance supervisor for Penn Central later known as NY Central Railroad.  William became the Director of Fleet Maintenance for Purity Supreme Supermarkets.  He moved his family to Chemsford, Massachusetts and was a former member of Chemsford Elks, member of Chelmsford Art Society, President of Chelmsford Choral Society, Founder and member of Merrimack Valley Chorale and Society of Fleet Maintenance Engineers.  William had a wonder sense of humor, loved to dance and take part in theatrical skits.  He also enjoyed camping, golf, and chocolate ice cream and was an avid Yankee fan.  In later years he worked part time as a bus driver for Scared Heart School, known as “Mr. Bill”  to the children. Aunt Jannie, Scott, Steven and Melissa, We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Billie's passing. We are grateful for knowing him, he was a special person. When our father, roy passed suddenly, Uncle Billie became our rock and the voice of reason even though he was clearly suffering as much as we were. It was then we realizied what a special relationship they truly had. We trust that now Bill and roy are back together, arguing baseball and watching over us all. We have missed seeing you all during these past years. You are in our hearts and prayers always especially at this most difficult time.

    17 Oct 2010
To Aunt Janice and Cousins Scott, Steven and Melissa, we were so sorry to hear recently of Uncle Bill's passing. My fondest memories of him involved our visits to your house in Chelmsford. I'll always remember my brother John and I trying in vain to endure Uncle Bill's incredibly strong handshake. Actually, in recent years, he insisted we drop the "Uncle" part and just call him Bill, so I will just add "Rest in Peace Bill" - we will miss you dearly.
