Obituary
William Thomas “Tom” Ludwig, 81, of Lakeland, FL formerly of Dania, FL died March 1, 2022 with his family by his side. Tom was born March 7, 1940 in Washington, DC to the late Mina Margaret (nee Moore) and Clarence Pinkney Ludwig. He grew up in Hamlet, NC and graduated from Hamlet High School Class of 1958.
After high school, he joined the United States Army and served time in Korea. From there he was transferred to Key West, FL where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Later, Tom joined the US Army National Guard Band and retired after 20 years of service to his country. He was a member of the American Legion Dania, Florida Post 304.
Tom received his Bacherlor’s degree in Physical Education from Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, NC where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He received his Master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL . Tom and his family settled in Dania, FL where he worked at Stirling Elementary, Hollywood, FL for many years as the Physical Education teacher. He retired from the Broward County School System in 1996.
He will be remembered for his “nine lives” after surviving two motorcycle accidents, a jogging accident, and multiple car accidents. Tom will also be remembered for his many years as the ringleader of the “Flatlanders”, the group that he brought together to hike the Appalachian Trail.
He is survived by his loving children, T. Avery and his wife, Peggy VanMeter of State College, PA and Ruth Anne Yeats of New Smyrna Beach, FL; devoted companion, Barbara Nevadomski of Lakeland, FL; cherished grandchildren, W. Avery and Adrianna Yeats, and T. Caden Ludwig; his former wife and the mother of his children, Ruth Ludwig (nee Mazeau) and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 11AM, Friday, March 25, 2022 at Culdee Presbyterian Church Cemetery, West End, NC with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
