Obituary

William R. Pyle, Sr., of The Villages, Florida and formerly of Havre de Grace, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly on October 13, 2022.  At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by family. Mr. Pyle, 85, was born on April 25, 1937, to William Toy Pyle and Virginia Mae Wharrey Pyle in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

Bill graduated from Havre de Grace High School where he met his wife of 68 years, Noreen Farrell Pyle, who survives him. After high school, Bill spent five years with the city of Havre de Grace as a police officer. He then went to work for the State of Maryland in the Income Tax Division.  During this time, he attended college and law school, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Following graduation and admission to the bar, he was named to the position of Director of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division, where he worked until he retired.

He loved hunting, fishing and boating on the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay, but his passion was woodworking.  Over the years, his family members benefited from this skill. Many of his treasured creations are displayed in their homes.  Bill was a volunteer fireman for over 20 years with the Susquehanna Hose Company. He was a member and volunteer of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. He was a lifetime member and officer of BPOE NO. 1564.

After moving to The Villages, Bill found many ways to occupy his time.  He enjoyed golfing and travel with friends and family. He joined the woodworking shop and volunteered with The Villages Emergency Response Team, (CERT).

In addition to his wife, Noreen, he is survived by their three children, Deborah Pyle Smith (Mike), of The Villages, Karen Pyle Maciboba (Steve), of Kennewick, WA and William Pyle, Jr. of The Villages.  Also surviving are his treasured grandchildren Kristy Welker (Tom), Stephen Maciboba (Kate), Lyndsay Bassett (Krissy), and Julie Shuman (Jamall), 8 great-grandchildren, Troy and Trevor Welker, Brecken and Watson Bassett, and Jazmine, Jamall, Jr., Jayla, and Jamison Shuman. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Arleen Coakley and Shareen Lee, brother-in law Robert Farrell, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his sisters, Rose Jane Ireland, Mildred Ann Wirsing, and Elizabeth Louise Pyle.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at 3:00 pm at Glenview Country Club, 3194 Glenview Road, The Villages, FL 32162.

I remember the first time I crossed paths, literally, with Billy Pyle. I was on my way walking hurriedly to Havre de Grace High School when I came to the intersection of Revolution and Juniata Streets. Officer Pyle stopped traffic so I could cross safely. I guess I must have been the last one to reach the crossing since he tagged me with a nickname of "Sleepy." Fortunately I always made it to school on time. But everytime I saw him in person or recently on Facebook, he still called me "Sleepy."
My sincere condolences to Noreen and family. May fond memories help to heal your hearts. May Billy rest in peace.
    Donna Hendricks Treat
