Obituary

Naomi Joyce Durant, 87, died Saturday July 22, 2017 surrounded by her family at home.
She leaves her husband of 67 years, Chuck Durant, her children Michael Durant & his wife Wendy, Kathy Durant & her husband Michael Dunne, & Missy Durant & her wife Samantha Hanson & 5 grandchildren, Josh, Emma Lou, Sarah, Ellie & Sam.
Born in Daytona Beach in 1930 in the doctors house to Paul & Pauline Edson, she was a lifelong resident.
Naomi was an avid reader with an insatiable curiosity & a life long learner. She met her husband at Seabreeze High School in Band. Legend has it they were on a band trip and when Chuck got on the bus, she said “You sit right here!” Their love for music brought them together & they shared it throughout her life.
She placed a high value on people being treated equally & throughout her life stood for those values in the face of adversity & cultural norms.
Naomi went back to school in her 40’s and became a social worker with Catholic Social Services working with unwed mothers & adoptive parents.
Naomi made a difference in the world.
A funeral mass will be held at Epiphany Catholic Church, 201 Lafayette St, Port Orange, FL 32127, Thursday at 11:00, followed by a short reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Halifax Health Hospice.

Chuck, Thinking of you and remembering the years Naomi and I worked together (well, she in Cocoa and me in Daytona) at Catholic Social Services, and our experiences with you both in square dancing-- your wife said you had the best derriere in the room! And our visits in Dillard. Didn't know you were back in this area. So sorry I couldn't be there for the service. What a great life you two had. She will be missed, but thought of gratefully by her family and many others.

Mr. Durant, (still having trouble calling you Chuck after so many years of "Mr. Durant") Kathy, Mike, and Missy, we were so sorry to hear of your loss. A huge portion of my fond childhood memories involve the fun our families had together. Sending hugs to you all and hoping for peace for you.

Sending love and prayers to Chuck, Mike, Kathy and Missy. Your Mom was such a sweet lady, as a child I always felt her kindness, I have to say observing her and your Dads relationship, it was the first one I was exposed to where I saw a couple who really loved each others company, I loved watching them all dressed up going to square dancing, they were so alive. And they even had the patience to bring me along on a few camping trips.....you kids were so blessed with such loving parents.

Mike, we can only hope and pray that a lifetime of good memories & hugs and smiles will carry you & your family through this difficult time. As I read she passed *Surrounded by her loving family* I thought THIS is a wonderful way to pass over~If we could all choose..at home in bed with all those you gave your life and heart to..that'd be our choice...You have been and are a loving son and I'm sure a great comfort to your Dad & the entire family. We were so sorry to hear of your loss. Hang in there Buddy and remember Mom's laughter and smiles...and of course her love, xoxo Patti & Steve
