Obituary

Lt. Colonel Robert W. Chapin USMCR, 90, died peacefully at his home May 16, 2017 New Smyrna Beach Florida with family by his side. A Marine Corp Aviator, he served 28 years in the service of his country as a proud career Marine. Having been in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, he received numerous commendations and a Bronze Star. He had received his pilot’s license at age 16, and transitioned from prop planes to the jet age in his military career. His favorite aircraft was the Skyhawk A4. He had the honor of being in the famed Blacksheep Squadron VMA 214. Bob, as he was known to his friends, was an avid golfer since his teens and could be found playing regularly at his home course at New Smyrna Municipal and had traveled the US and abroad hitting the links. Bob was a licensed boat captain and loved offshore fishing with his family and friends. Bob was a local New Smyrna entrepreneur, Realtor and served on numerous city boards. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, son of the late Alfred and Lois Chapin of Peoria Illinois and younger brother to the late A.E Chapin Jr. He was predeceased by his wife Jean Chapin, mother to his children Billy Chapin(Marianne Chapin) and Jeanie Chapin Lomax(Clifford Lomax). Bob was lucky to find love a second time and was married 31 years to Sylvia Dee Chapin who passed away earlier this year. He was adored by his grandchildren; Ryan Chapin (Diana), Samantha McCoy (Patrick) Neil Lomax, Eric Lomax, Kyle Chapin and Gabrielle Chapin. Great Grandchildren are Mattie Lopez, Isabella Chapin and Luke McCoy. The family extends an invitation to friends to a memorial service at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home, 1 N. Causeway New Smyrna Beach, FL on Sunday, May 21st at 2:00pm. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the USO and The American Red Cross in his name.
