Obituary

Hildegarde Johnson Grimes passed away peacefully on December 1, 2018 at home.  She was born to Oscar and Ruth Johnson, October 17, 1921 in Bloomington, Indiana.  Hildegarde recently celebrated her 97th birthday.

 

Hildegarde was the oldest of three children.  She graduated from Miami Senior High School in Florida.  She attended Breanau College in Georgia, where she joined Phi Mu fraternity and was a member for over 75 years.

 

Hildegarde met her future husband, Gordon in Miami, Florida.  They were married in June 1942 and had two daughters.

 

Hildegarde was an active resident of Arlington, Virginia.  Then she was a founding member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia and served on the altar guild.  She was a member of the Northern Virginia chapter of The National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc..  Hildegarde was an active member of P.E.O. for over 55 years as well a member of The National Society of the U.S. Daughters of 1812.  She served on the advisory board of The Northern Virginia Mental Health Association for several years.

 

Hildegarde retired in 1986 from WRC-TV (NBC) in Washington, D.C..  In retirement she enjoyed traveling and visited over thirty countries.

 

Hildegarde was predeceased by her husband Gordon; her brother Retired U.S. Army Col. Daniel Johnson; and one granddaughter.

 

Hildegarde is survived by her daughters, Virginia Brooks of Durham, North Carolina and Gwendolyn Brandner and son-in-law, George Brandner, of Longwood, Florida; one granddaughter, two grandsons and one great granddaughter.  A sister, Virginia Worley, of Highlands, North Carolina.

 

Graveside services will be held at Culpepper National Cemetery in Virginia.
