Obituary

     Michael Edward Alexander, 72, of Fort Myers, Florida, peacefully passed on at 5:06 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at Healthpark Medical Center in Fort Myers with his family at his side.

     Mike was born December 24, 1946, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Everett Edward and Vera Guylene McMahan Alexander.  He lived in Michigan until his junior year in high school when his mother moved the family back to her hometown in southern Illinois after his father’s death.  In 1965, Mike graduated from high school in Carrier Mills, Illinois, and continued his education at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, graduating with a B.A. in political science and history in 1969.  For eight years he taught junior high social studies in Bushnell-Prairie City, Illinois, where he married his former wife, Gwen Aten, and they had two daughters.  During this time he received a Master’s degree in political science from Western Illinois University.

     For four years, Mike was a school principal at Union C.U.S.D., Biggsville, IL, while working on his Education Specialist degree which he attained in 1981 from Western Illinois University.  He then became a superintendent of schools, serving six years at Triopia C.U.S.D. in Concord, IL, and twelve years at Warrensburg-Latham C.U.S.D. During that time, Michael completed his Ph.D. in Educational Administration in 1992 from Southern Illinois University.

     Dr. Alexander’s professional memberships included the American Association of School Administrators, and the Illinois Association of School Administrators, for which he served on the State Legislative Committee and the Board of Directors.  He was a member of the Lions Club and the Elks Lodge and was a football and basketball referee for many years.  Having dual statehood, he was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, as well as the Chicago Cubs and Bears. Mike grew up deer hunting with his father, fishing, and was an avid golfer.  He loved his Lexington Country Club  golf groups.

     Mike is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Arlene, and his daughters Tonya Uselton (Ron) of Green Valley,  IL, and Kelly Phillips (Christopher) of College Grove, TN; grandchildren Nicole and Jake Uselton, and Jessica, Jacob, Jayden, and Jordan Phillips; sister Susan Enstrom of Springfield, IL, and brother Kevin Alexander of Evansville, IN.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

     Following Mike’s wishes, there will be an informal celebration of him at Lexington Country Club in Fort Myers on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at 4:00p.m.

    My wife and I recently moved to Florida, where I came across Mike's obit. In 1975, I was a student teacher at Bushnell Junior High, under the supervision of Mike. I learned quite a bit from him on what it takes to be a successful teacher. Although I did not become a teacher in a school district, I did become an Illinois State Police officer, where one of my assignments was an instructor at the Illinois State Police Academy. Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathies on his passing.

    Arlene and Family;
    Please accept my condolences during this difficult time. I worked with Mike as part of the administrative team at Warrensburg-Latham for 5 years, serving as assistant principal and principal . I learned many valuable lessons from Mike and went on to be a successful administrator in Decatur Public Schools for five years and later a school superintendent at Spoon River Valley and VIT School districts for ten years. You will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
    My Best,

    I served as president of the Triopia School Board when we hired Mike as our superintendent. Mike was instrumental in bringing our grade schools to the present campus and making the building additions required a success. Our community will always be grateful for his service. To Arlene and Mike's entire family please accept our sympathies. May God wrap you all in His loving arms and bring you His peace.

    During the course of each of our lives we meet many people. If we are lucky we get to meet special people. Make was such a person, special, very special. I met Mike when we were both superintendent colleagues in Macon County back in the late 1980’s. It was during these days we became friends. Later in our careers I was serving as the executive director of the Illinois Association of School Administrators. The staff at the IASA always called him Dr. Mike. Mike because he was so personable. Dr. because of their respect for him. A significant part of my position there was to lend advise and support to the members of the association throughout the state, to members such as Mike. Only in his case he was the one I went to for such advice. Mike was always thoughtful and always loyal, and always had my back regardless of the circumstances. I will miss you Dr. Mike.

    Mike hired me at Triopia in the spring of 1990. He later that year told me that he could see me finishing my career in education at Triopia. He was correct, as I retired this June as superintendent a position I held for 10 years. The entire Triopia family sends its condolences to the family and Arlene who I had the privilege of working with while she worked at Triopia.

    Mike was always a great guy to be around. He was knowledgeable and fun and always helpful to others. After talking to Mike you found out about his teaching career but rarely did he talk about his amazing accomplishments.
    Mike, you will be missed by me and many other Lexington Members.
