I just came across this obituary doing a search to see if I could find out if my uncle, Edwin F. Ufheil and his wife, Denise were OK after Hurricane Ian raked Fort Myers where they lived. It's kind of a weird moment to find out that he's been gone for 20 months and I didn't even know it.

Edwin was my mother's brother and he lived with us in far southwestern Chicago for many years when I was growing up. I was too small to understand what war was but I remember not liking it that he wasn't around the house during the Korean War.

I have so many fond memories of my favorite uncle- going to watch him play softball, his amazing fireworks shows on New Years and July 4th; and the friends he would bring over to the house were always very unique and interesting characters; my dad being a police officer was much more staid in his demeanor. Uncle Ed, (affectionately know as Rip within the family) really made an impression on me because he seemed to be the only one in the family that looked like he wanted to have any fun. My parents would get mad at him when he would tie my little sister's tennis shoes on our dog, Pretzel's back feet and we would watch Pretz try to shake them off, but I thought it was hilarious and fun.

Well, I guess it's good to know he didn't have to experience the hurricane. I hope Diane was able to get out of town before it hit.
