John was my brother from my father's side. He was already a decorated military man, father, and husband when I was born., But he was always so nice to me. He always treated me with respect, and kindness dispute our age difference. My parents would take me over to visit him, and I would play with his daughters. When our dad died he held my hand on the plane, as my mom wasn't able to travel to Puerto Rico on such short notice. I was only 11, and I was scared, he made feel comforted, and protected during such a traumatic event. My condolences to his immediate family. He was a wonderful man, this feels sureal.

John was my older brother from my father's side. I remember being little girl and going to visit him, his wife, and kids with my parents. I always knew him as military man. My last memory of him was when our dad passed, away, and he along with our sister Doris flew with me to Puerto Rico for the funeral because my mom couldn't. I was only 11, he held my hand as the plane took off. Unfortunately I don't remember seeing him after that. I remember us speaking over the phone once I was an adult, but never made it around to see him. I remember he was always so kind to me. My condolences to his immediate family, so sorry you are going through this difficult time. My brother was an amazing man

To the family of John A. Mendez
I will remember Mendez as my friend, and as a proud Paratrooper, a decorated combat soldier,, and for the times we served together. I enjoyed the good times we spent over the years at the 173d reunions. I feel honored to have known and served with him. Tonight I will be raising a glass and thinking of him up there in heaven. My condolence. Airborne All The Way! "And then some".

Rest well with our brother Sky Soldiers. Have patience and the Herd will be reunited to turn the heavens upside down. I’m sure all your brothers from Chapter II will say “ABATW” and “give them hell”.

John A. Mendez was an American true hero. Served in Vietnam and wounded twice. When ever he and I finished talking be it in person or telephone, I would say, “Airborne all they way!” John would say, “And more!” God bless his soul, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
