Obituary
Douglas C. Covert, age 93, college professor, media producer and environmentalist, died June 15, 2022 in The Villages, Florida of pneumonia.
Born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1929, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1952 with a degree in forestry and wildlife management and earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Communication from Michigan State University in 1982.
Doug served on the curatorial staff of the Detroit Zoological Park before founding Techmedia Inc. where he produced nearly 200 training programs for Fortune 500 companies and governmental and non-governmental organizations.
He taught communication students at California State University – Fullerton, Indiana University School of Journalism at Indianapolis and University of Evansville where he retired as emeritus professor, then continued teaching at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL.
He received a Volunteers in Juvenile and Criminal Justice citation from former presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, from Volunteers in Prevention, Probation and Prisons Inc.; the Lola L. Lohse Faculty Award for Service to Students at Indiana University – Purdue University at Indianapolis; and was elected to The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
He developed forestry and wildlife management plans for private organizations and with his second wife, Caroline Dow, conducted research on the effects of sound stress on women contributing to reform of international standards on the loudness of environmental sound in the workplace.
Doug was a member of the Society of Les Voyageurs for more than 50 years, the National Press Photographers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Bay View Association, a Christian Chautauqua community in Northern Michigan.
He is survived by three children, Nancy L. Covert, James R. Covert and Barbara A. Emmer; two stepchildren, David J. Dykhouse Jr. and J. Douglas Dykhouse; twelve grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bay View Association Memorial Garden in Michigan or Friends School in Detroit, Detroit, Michigan.
