Obituary
Edward C. Sturm passed away on April 28th at the age of 75. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 55 years, Catherine (nee Ilario), his son, Edward his wife Dena (nee Goldstein), his daughter Jeannine St. Lawrence and her husband Kenneth, his daughter Dawn Sturm, grandchildren, Samantha, Jack and Mallory, step grandchildren Jared and Aulden, Mother in Law Jean Ilario (nee Caruso), Sisters in Law Rosemary DePasquale (nee Ilario) and Donna Ilario, and his three dogs and parrot.
Son of Charles and Agnes Sturm, Ed was born in New York on December 13, 1946. He grew up on Long Island where he met the love of his life while still in high school. They moved to Little Ferry, NJ in 1968, where he served as a volunteer firefighter for numerous years. He was a Police Officer in Moonachie before joining the Bergen County Police force, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and oversaw the county’s Office of Emergency Management and Hazardous Materials Response Team. He retired in 1994 and relocated to Sarasota, Florida, with his children eventually following.
He was an avid fisherman, a hockey fan, stock trader and guitar player and particularly enjoyed sunsets at Patriot’s Pier on Siesta Key Beach with his wife and dogs. He was quite famous there, although rather than ‘Ed,’ he was better known to the regulars as “Teddy’s Dad,” referring to his wildly popular 175 lb. Newfoundland dog that both residents and tourists were enamored with. Those who weren’t fond of the big dog could instead enjoy the company of “Little Dog,” referring to his 13 lb. Mini Dachshund, Chance or the medium-sized dog, German Shorthair Pointer Willow. He will be remembered for his service as a Police Officer and Firefighter, his exceptionally witty sense of humor, and his lifelong devotion to his wife, children and pets.
