Albert Richard Spanagel (Dick) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, born October 29, 1936, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Regency Elderly Care Assisted Living Facility in Edgewater, Florida.
Dick is survived by his wife Patricia (Pat) nee Dirr, their daughter, Kathi Holland (John), son Stephen Spanagel (Lisa), and daughter RaeLynn DeAngelis (Gerald). He is also survived by 6 Grandchildren: Dustin Nelson, Brendon Nelson (Patricia), Heather Hutzel (David), Benjamin DeAngelis, Timothy Corbett-Spanagel (Zachary), and Samantha Charters (Francisco), as well as three great grandchildren. Dick is also survived by siblings Wanda Steinker, Nancy Frazer, William Spanagel and Martin Spanagel. Predeceasing him are his parents Albert Henry Spanagel and Alberta Lucille Spanagel, nee VanOsdol.
Dick grew up in the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio area. He graduated from Elder High School, signed up for the Coast Guard Reserves, and began an apprenticeship as a Journeyman Electrician.
Dick and Pat met on Labor Day Weekend in 1957 and married on May 30, 1959. Through their married life together they lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, Southeast Indiana, Harrison, Ohio, and New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
After completing his apprenticeship, Dick worked in the Service Department of Cincinnati Pepsi Cola Co. for 28 years, first as a service representative, then as department manager. At this point he left Pepsi and started his own very successful business selling vending machines to soft drink bottling and distribution companies.
Dick was the consummate outdoorsman. He had a lifelong love affair with hunting, having started as a young teenager. This hobby took him on many excursions, including multiple trips to Africa, Canada, Colorado and other states. He and Pat even purchased a hunting property in Southeast Indiana where he spent many happy days and hours enjoying his favorite sport and providing meat for family and friends. Dick also loved playing golf, boating, water skiing, riding and grooming his horses, caring for his hunting dogs, snow skiing, motorcycle riding and other activities too numerous to list.
He loved technology and always had the newest gadget as it became available, including computers, phones, cameras or you name it. He became an expert in understanding their complexities and was very generous in assisting anyone less tech smart who sought his help sorting out the predicaments they had fallen into.
Ever the good friend, he was a caring and faithful husband, a great father (his son’s best friend), the “best father a girl could have” according to his daughters, a fun grandfather, and a very proud great grandfather!
He will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know him.
