Obituary

Rich Dirmyer, 76, of Cape Coral FL passed away peacefully with his beloved family by his side on April 12, 2023 in Cape Coral.

A military service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on June 16, 2023 at Sarasota National Cemetery.

Richard was born in North Tonawanda, NY to Eugene and Ruth Dirmyer (Vogt) on March 17, 1947. Part of the Tonawanda High School class of 1965, he then graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta with his Bachelor’s degree in History, lettering for four years as the goalkeeper for the Red Dragons soccer team. He was also a brother of the Delta Phi Kappa fraternity.

He worked in the insurance industry for 33 years as a manager for Maryland Casualty Company and Zurich. Earlier he was a parole officer in Nassau County, NY. Richard was a veteran of the United States Army, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Patti; his children Michelle (Chris) Nightingale, Eric Reitler, Matthew (Vicky) Dirmyer, Jillian (Al) Miller, and Hope Reitler; a brother Thomas (Joan) Dirmyer and sister Pamela (Lawrence) Noggle; mother-in-law Mary Brennan; and his nine grandchildren Anthony, Zackary, Madelyn, Emma, Giavanna, Wyatt, Shay, Stella and AJ.

An avid golfer, bowler, and euchre player, Rich enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog Gypsy . He was incredibly handy and was always fixing something around the house. He was an excellent cook; he loved to share a meal (and a Manhattan) with family and friends. He was also an enthusiastic sports fan, namely of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, and could often be seen on the sidelines for many of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He had an infectious personality, was compassionate and caring, was a provider of great advice, and had a great sense of humor.

Memorials may be given to Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, FL.

I was priviledged to attend Oneonta with Rich although during the 2 1/2 years I was there he was called Buzz by most of his friends and associates. I was a transfer student and was quite fortunate to have been assigned to room in his quad. Buzz was extremely outgoing and popular and always went out of his way to introduce me to his many friends and include me in social activities. I just today learned that he had passed away and extend my sincere condolences to his loved ones. He was a very nice guy.

I am so sorry to hear about cousin Dickie. He was a great guy. I will always remember him dearly. My heart goes out to the family. We lost touch over the years since his mom and dad past but the memories are still there of all the good times we had as children. Love him forever.
