Obituary

Philip Lee Hoover, born in Columbus, Ohio, passed away on 2/15/2024 at the age of 80. His warrior spirit gave one hell of a fight to cancer. Phil was a larger than life personality that made a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a mentor, leader and great friend to many. A true family man, Phil was a dedicated and proud father and grandfather, and a doting and loving husband to his bride of 54 years, Leslee.

Never short of gratitude or perspective and a firm believer in the power of the present moment.“Semper Avanti”- always forward, was one of his personal credos, as was the power of the Serenity Prayer.

He loved art, scuba diving, travel, theatre, music and all things outdoors. He used humor to connect people and had an anecdote for any situation.

Phil is preceded in death by his father, Armand Leroy Hoover and mother Martha Alice Hoover. He is survived by his bride of 54 years Leslee (née Wilson) Hoover, brother Mike (Denise) Hoover, and sister Kim (Steve) Lowe-Hoover, children Rachel (Steve) Tomsic and Zach (Sandi) Hoover; grandchildren Sullivan, Asher, Samson, Cohen and Eversen; numerous nieces and nephews, and faithful canine companion Harley.

Memorial/Celebration of Life Service will be held at Eisenhower Recreation Center, 3560 Buena Vista Boulevard, The Villages, FL. 32163 on March 2nd, 2024, 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to The Gary Sinise Foundation: https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/donate

Phil and I first met when we were working at Orient Stat Inst. in Ohio in 1971. He left there and took over, with Les's great help, a group home for developmentally challenged young men many of whom I placed there as a social worker from Orient. This was the beginning of a 55 year friendship that, with a few years where we lost touch with each other but when we connected, felt like only a couple of days had passed. Phil always answered my calls with "Hey Gonzalez, Gonzalez, Gonzalez, Garcia, Gonzalez" and then proceed to tell me about Les and his latest adventures. He was a true friend who will always be remember in my heart of hearts for his positive, caring nature and fantastic sense of humor. Party on Phils

Visits to Uncle Phil and Aunt Les’s Ann Arbor house during the holidays growing up was always an exciting time for me. As a little boy, I thought Uncle Phil was fun, exciting and unpredictable! He kept me and my brothers Steve and Bill on our toes. I can still hear his big, booming voice in my head to this day. Eric Wilson (nephew)

Phil became our big brother when our mother and his father fell in love and got married; that was 1993. Through the years we've built a close and loving bond with Phil, Les, and their family. We got to spend quality time together over the years (counting texts during Buckeyes’ football games) and we always kept Phil close in our hearts. I’ll miss his great sense of humor, his clever wit, and most of all his love.

I met Phil when he and Leslie moved to Des Moines. Phil came to run the Radio Group. We were both in our 50’s and he quickly became my best friend. We shared many great adventures over the next several years, some of which I’m even comfortable talking about. Like one time we went to Vegas ostensibly to play golf. We were heading to the room one night and Phil wanted to stop for a minute at a video poker machine. The next morning I realized that he hadn’t come to bed so I went looking for him. He was still at that same machine. We obviously missed our tee time that morning. I’ve never found a replacement for Phil. I still see that silly grin in my head all the time.

It is a sad goodbye to my big brother who always made me feel safe, accepted, and loved. His hugs will be irreplacable. His guidance and wisdom were always a steady and reliable compass throughout my life. I can't help but feel more than a little bit lost without him. Phil was my Obi-Wan. May the Force be with you, Big Brother, until we meet at the Rainbow Bridge.

A bother in law who was always funny and gracious to me. He smiled a lot and the humor increased when playing boci ball or having a meal together. He will be missed by me.
