Obituary
Alfred (Al) John Zappi, Jr., a long-time resident of Ormond Beach died at home May 19, 2019 surrounded by loved ones. Al was born in Babylon, New York to Alfred John and Marie Genna Zappi on May 5, 1940. He graduated from Seaford (N.Y.) High School and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service, Al began a thirty-six year career with the Federal Aviation Administration, which led to a supervisory position at Daytona Beach in 1973. He was awarded the prestigious FAA Associate Administrator’s Award for Excellence (Golden Key Award) in 1991. Though his work was in aviation electronics, Al earned a BA in theater arts and both acted in and directed many community theater plays in Pomona, N.J. and at the Daytona Playhouse. He was passionate about life, the people he loved, Unity Church, flying and Disney World. Al was brilliant, funny, loyal, deeply spiritual, loving, dedicated to his family and friends, a proud veteran, a private pilot and enthusiastic member of Civil Air Patrol.
Al is predeceased by his parents, first wife, Judy and sister, Kathy Hecht.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carmen, daughters, Deborah Henley and husband, Robert (FL), Laura Zappi (Austin, TX), Shaunda Lambert and wife Leslie (FL), Heidi Swale and husband Andy (FL), grandchildren Cole Henley (NC), Sara Henley (FL), Elsie Swale (FL) and Emily Swale (FL).
A Celebration of Al’s Life will be Saturday, June 1, 2019 10:00 AM at Unity Church,
908 Ridgewood Avenue, Holly Hill, FL 32117. Reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to Unity Church.
