Obituary
Charles Edwin Yates, 92, of N. Fort Myers, FL passed away on December 23, 2019 at his residence. He was born on May 13, 1927 in Louisville, KY to the late William Patrick Yates and Mary (Livers) Yates. Charles enjoyed golfing, swimming, and dancing. Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany during WWII. He then worked as a Police Officer, and on Sept 10, 1951, he joined the department, served as a patrolman in the 4th and 1st Districts, served in the Vice Squad from 57 to 62, served in the Detective Bureau until 1970, transferred to the ETU unit until he was transferred to the Mayor’s office in 1973 to Dec. 1976 when he retired from the department. Some of Charles memorable experiences was security duty for President, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, also met Goldwater, Regan and Carter, helped form the FOP in 1962, elected National Trustee for 4 year, served on Legislative Committee for 14 years. Retired 12-15-76, went to work for State Government as Assist Director of Labor Standards Division, retired 3-1-91, then work 4 years as OSHA Commissioner until 3-1-97. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Audrey M. Yates; his daughter, Donna Vincent; his daughter, Susan Carter; his son, Charles Edwin Yates, Jr; his daughter, Julie Mayfield; his brother, Bernard Yates (Wanda); his sister, Laverne Parish; his sister, Joanne Yates Hall; his sister-in-law, Emmie Yates; his step children, Edward (Terry Lawler, Sean (Stacey) Lawler, and Patricia (Daniel) Bird; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Lou Yates, and his brothers, Earl Yates and Kenneth Yates. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm with a Memorial Service celebrating the life of Charles starting at 5:00 pm on January 9, 2020 at Owens Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY 40216. Burial will follow on January 10, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 N. Dixie Blvd., Radcliff, KY 40160. Arrangements are under the care and trust of Baldwin Brothers Funeral and Cremation Society, Ft. Myers, FL.
