Corey Lee Hicks, 41, of Cape Coral, Florida died unexpectedly Saturday, October 17, 2020 at his residence.  He was born September 10, 1979 in Tupelo, Mississippi, the son of Larry L. Hicks and Colleen (Barney) Verlaan.  He graduated from Cape Coral High School in 1997 where he was a member of the Cape Coral High School Seahawks Football Team.  He attended Cape Coral Community Church.  For all the people’s lives that Corey Lee has touched he will always be remembered for his smile, big bear hugs, generosity, love, and compassion. Remember to always love one another. Nothing in life lasts forever, so everything matters.

Corey is survived by his father, Larry L. Hicks of Ft. Myers, FL; step-father, Derrek-ian G. Verlaan and mother, Colleen (Barney) Verlaan; fiancée, Courtney Ferguson-Guarino and her children; and grandfather, Robert (Papa) Blakeslee of Cape Coral, FL. Also surviving are his nephew, Garrett L. Hicks (fiancée, Bre Alexandria) of Kansas City, MO; niece, Shelby L. Hicks (fiancé, JR Dorvil) and two great-nephews (Dominyc and Roman) of Largo, FL; and a multitude of  aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Travis L. Hicks of Cape Coral, FL on September 9, 2019.

Due to COVID-19 and the potential health effects of large  gatherings the family has made the decision to forgo the memorial service to honor the life of Corey Lee Hicks at this time. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in honor of Corey please send it to the Salvation Army Services: Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Primary Care, Transitional Housing, 2400 Edison Ave, Fort Myers, FL, 33901   239-334-3745.  The family asks  that you stop and take a moment of prayer and reflection on December 5th at 1:00 PM  thanking God that Corey Lee is no longer fighting his personal struggles and pain. He is finally resting in peace with his brother Travis Lee.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage  to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. (Niebuhr)

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.(Revelations 21:4)

When we all meet again, I will wrap my arms around you, tell you how much I love you and how I have missed you. I will take your hand and we will walk together forever in Heaven. Love, Momma…..
