Obituary

Don Johnston, 59, of Fort Myers, FL and formerly of Toronto, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Health Park Medical Center under Hospice Care, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle fighting Pulmonary Fibrosis and Langerhans Cell Hisitiocytosis. Even though he was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease in 2014, he chose to continue his daily life as he normal as possible while fighting for every breath he took until the end.
He was born August 14, 1962 in Steubenville, Ohio to Sandra Kelly and Johnston. He is preceded in death by his father, John L. Johnston; his maternal grandparents, Mary & George Cortright; his paternal grandparents, Helen & Earl Johns, and several Aunts and Uncles.
He is survived by his loving mother, Sandy Kelly; his brothers: John (Robin) Johnston of Dayton, Brian Johnston (longtime companion, Beth) of /Toronto; his nephews: Adam (Erica) Johnston, Matthew (Kelly) Johnston, Nate Johnston all of Dayton, OH, Tom (Reva) Johnston Stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA; several great nieces and nephews and his Aunt Terri (Jeff) Reynolds of Bradenton, FL; along with several cousins and his companion to the end “Chubs”.
He was a graduate of Toronto High School, Class of 1980 and was an active member of the USAF, earning an Associates Degree in Business from CCAF. He retired in 2016 from Retail Management due to his illness.
There will be a private ceremony and celebration of his life in the future. At his request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation @ www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org.
