Obituary

Dorothy (nee Pfeil) Hamburg, 103, originally from Reedsburg, WI, passed away on February 24 at Tuscan Gardens of Venetia Bay Senior Living, Venice, Florida. She was born February 18, 1921, the daughter of Edward and Lena (Vosen) Pfeil in rural Wisconsin. On June 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Willis Hamburg, and they were married for 68 years at the time of his passing in 2012 at age 92. They were blessed with two children, Sharon, and Richard.

Dorothy received her BS degree in education at UW-Platteville and taught elementary levels for 46 years. She knew she wanted to become a teacher when she was in third grade. Dorothy started her teaching career in Sauk County Rural schools in 1941, later teaching in Wisconsin Dells and Reedsburg, WI, where she retired after teaching at South School for 23 years.

Dorothy was a talented seamstress, enjoyed crafts, reading, crocheting, and watching the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. After retiring in 1986, she and Willis were able to travel, and she enjoyed working as a volunteer at Reedsburg Area Medical Center for 22 years. She moved to Venice, FL with her daughter and son-in-law in 2020 where she could be seen walking diligently at the Venetian Golf and River Club and visiting with other walkers frequently. Dorothy was celebrated by the community on her 100th, 101st and 102nd birthdays with drive-by parades, and was the cover story for the first issue of the North Venice Magazine. She moved to Tuscan Gardens of Venetia Bay Senior Living April 2023 where she played competitive Bingo and enjoyed daily exercise classes.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Sharon George, Venice, FL; son Richard (Dang) Hamburg, Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law Alice Hamburg, Reedsburg, WI; Cousin Gene Pfeil, Lake Delton, WI; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Willis; son-in-law, Keith George; brother and sister-in-law, Joe, and Delores Pfeil; sister and brother-in-law Mary Alice and Earl Frye; and brother-in-law, Charles Hamburg.

A private service burial will be held by the family on June 22 in the Calvary Cemetery, Reedsburg, WI.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the following: Dorothy’s friends in Reedsburg, WI, especially to the wonderful neighbors on Seymour Street, Bernie Rynkowski, Kristy Leesch, and Pat Visgar, who made it possible for Dorothy to live in her Reedsburg home until age 99; her Venice, FL friends, Jeannie Palacio, Joretta Jones, Pam Militante, Olga Yuri, Doug and Shelly Orange, and Diane DiStefano, who helped the family facilitate Dorothy’s transition to assisted living; and Tidewell Hospice and Tuscan Gardens for the care Dorothy received her last months.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to American Heart Association (PO Box 840692, Dallas, RX 75284-0692), or Tideswell Foundation 800-854-3402. Funeral Arrangements are being handled by Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in Venice, FL.

I had the pleasure of taking care of Dorothy while I was staying in Venice. She was a very sweet lady who walked every day around her neighborhood. I enjoyed talking with her about her teaching experiences and admired her love for books.
We enjoyed sitting out in the garage and she enjoyed greeting everyone that passed by. May you rest in eternal peace!
    God bless you Dorothy!
    Love you,
    Jeannie

I really enjoyed taking care of Dorothy in Venice. I admired her determination to walk every single day for as long as she could. It was a pleasure for me to hear about her teaching experiences and watch Jeopardy with her. She loved to greet everybody that passed by while sitting out in the garage. I’ll miss you Dorothy but someday we’ll see each other again. God bless you
    Love,
    Jeannie
