Obituary

Douglas James Kopinski, (78), of Englewood, Florida passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Doug was born in Detroit, Michigan. He served his country in the U.S. Navy (1965-1969), and after the military he continued to serve as an educator, teaching photography at East Los Angeles College until he retired in 2008. Doug was admired for being an insatiably curious soul who was unabashedly himself. He was an artist, a photographer, and a lover of science fiction. He was a giving person who was always ready to help family and strangers alike. Above all else, Doug deeply loved and was loved by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Francis Kopinski, his son, Brian Kopinski, his daughter-in-law Sabrina Tubio-Cid, and his granddaughter, Karolina Kopinski. He will be forever loved and missed as well by his extended family and friends. Doug’s family will be holding a service on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 3pm at Foxwood Community Center, 561 Foxwood Blvd., Englewood, FL 34223.  In place of flowers the family is requesting donations to place a Palm Tree in Doug’s honor in his community (Please send to Doug’s Palm – C/o Gail Fern, 679 Linden Dr, Englewood, FL 34223).

Doug was always one of my favorite “adults” when I was growing up because he had such a sense of wonder and excitement about the world - and also he was just a big kid.

My life was better for having known him (and Fran and Brian too!) and I will always be thankful for my time with the Kopinski’s. Many great memories.

Much love to Fran, Brian and all of the family and friends who lost Doug too soon.

Doug was a wonder. Talented, kind, generous, and a very wonderful person. You’ll be greatly missed by both family and friends, but he’ll remain in our hearts forever. We wish for peace for his family and friends. Goodbye, Doug.

Brian, Fran, Karolina and Sabrina, we are thinking of you all during this hard time. We loved meeting and spending time with Doug, love of his family, wit and creativity made Doug a pleasure to be with. Sending lots of love and strength to the family during this difficult time.

It was a pleasure to know Doug in the years since Brian and my sister, Sabrina, got married. He always had a dollar-bill origami and a corny joke or two for me during the several holidays we spent together. His creativity and love of Star Wars lives on in both Brian and Karolina. Fran, Brian and extended family, I'm thinking of you all and sending my love and deepest condolences in light of this shocking and sad news.

Doug was a guy you could really count on - his word was gold - and you could take it to the bank.

He was the best boss I ever had and I am thankful that he trusted me so much with the photo students, making it a wonderful experience to teach with him.

I missed him when he retired and will forever miss him now. He will always be an important part of my life.

Doug awakened me to creativity, along with his close friend Tom Blum (my stepdad) and Merv (Tom’s best friend.) So I am blessed to have had this group of creatives who confirmed my own potential as a creative person. Fran and Brian, I miss you and am holding you throughout this loss.

Doug, we love you as you loved us. You were an original. Your smile filled a room. I will miss you. Say hello to my Mom & Dad for me.
