Obituary

Edward Paul Savicki, known affectionately as Eddie and “Skipper” to his friends and loved ones, embarked on his final journey on April 16, 2024. He passed in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, in Port Orange, FL, just 5 days after celebrating his 83rd birthday.

Born on April 11, 1941, to the late Edward and Ida (Leigh) Savicki, Eddie’s life was a testament to the joy and love that one person can bring into the world. He was a beacon of light and strength, inspiring all who knew him with his unwavering positivity.

Eddie’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Shirley (VanDyke) Savicki and their vibrant family tapestry that includes their children, Pam and Willie Hollenbeck, Kevin and Christine Doolen, Teresa and Mike Brown, Mark Savicki, Tina and William Szalkowski, and Ed and Kim Fernalld. He was a cherished grandfather to Chonaphet and Joe Cappelli, Devyn and Casey Hollenbeck, Maeline Hollenbeck and her fiancé, Eric Bischof, Doug and Danielle Doolen, Leanne and Bryan Miller, Alyssa Shearing and her boyfriend, Hunter Long, Cory Shearing and his girlfriend, Norah O’Dea, Samantha and Adam Heuther, Charlie and Kim Costa, Nick Szalkowski and his girlfriend,Natalie Hillage, Maegan Szalkowski and her fiancé, Mike Mobilia, Caitlyn Szalkowski and her boyfriend, Noah Pincher, and Mike and Lia Fernalld. His many great-grandchildren, who filled his life with boundless joy, will also carry forward his spirit. Eddie was a devoted brother-in-law to Ronnie VanDyke and his wife, Kathy. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Karen Savicki, whose memories remained etched in his heart.

Eddie was a proud graduate of Sauquoit Valley Central School and dedicated many years of hard work at the Doeskin Paper Mill, Clayville Ice, Weisenberger Corporation and Feldmeier Equipment in Syracuse. He later owned and operated his own company doing cemetery repair work as Ed’s Monument Foundations. Eddie was a man who not only built a career but also nurtured lasting relationships with those he worked alongside.

Eddie proudly served his community as Captain, President and Fire Commissioner of the Cassville Fire Department and district.

Upon his well-deserved retirement in 2016, Eddie moved to Florida with Shirley where they lived out their beachside dream.

His interests painted the picture of a man who loved life’s simple pleasures. Eddie was an avid fisherman, finding peace and tranquility in the gentle lapping of the waves against the hull of his boat and cherished the countless relaxing hours spent with Shirley just enjoying each others company. Hunting was also a passion, especially spending time in the woods with his son Kevin, regardless of whether they got a deer or not. He was also a formidable bowler, boasting two perfect games that reflected his precision and focus. Eddie’s passion for the New York Yankees was unparalleled; he bled pinstripes and cheered on his team with an infectious enthusiasm.

Above all, Eddie’s family meant the world to him. His love for his family was his guiding compass, and he instilled in them the values of loyalty, compassion, and unwavering support. He had a contagious sense of humor and sarcastic wit that his family will always remember fondly. Eddie was mild mannered, soft hearted and hard headed as you get. He texted or called the family every Sunday and was punctual enough to set your clock by.

Eddie’s life was a journey of joy, laughter, and love. He never missed an opportunity to make a positive impact, whether through a kind word or a helping hand. His presence was a source of comfort and inspiration, and he will be remembered as a man who lived with purpose and passion.

In the words of Helen Keller, “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Eddie’s love, kindness, and zest for life have become a part of all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come. Though we say goodbye to Edward Paul Savicki, his spirit remains a guiding light, urging us to live fully, love deeply, and bowl a perfect game in the lanes of life.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date and time to be announced. Eddie will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sauquoit.

It feels like just yesterday Chona, Devyn and I were riding in the back of his truck smushed together on the way to go fishing. One of my favorite memories is of all of us dancing in the pouring rain at the old house. We did fun things like that all the time at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandpa truly did bring such a positive, fun energy into our family, and we will all miss him so much. Until we meet again Grandpa. I love you.
