DESVOUSGES
Edwin Gibson Desvousges, age 67, died on Sunday, October 16, 2016, of complications from an extended illness. He was born in St. Augustine on August 8, 1949. His parents, Wilma Gibson and George Louis Desvousges, moved the family to New Smyrna Beach just before Ed started kindergarten. He remained in the area so he could keep his feet in salt water and stay close to his ‘Cuda teammates and longtime friends. Ed retired from Republic National Distributing Company as regional sales manager. He celebrated his 65th birthday and retirement at the same party. Many of his customers became his friends. That was Ed being Ed. He loved a party and would cook ribs or pork butts and invite the gang over to watch whatever sport was on, especially Gator football. Appropriately, the last game he watched was a Gator victory! Ed is survived by his children: Daniel Alan Desvousges (Darlene), Gainesville; Michele Desvousges Mathis (Michael), Panama City Beach; Grandchildren: Ronald Walker Mathis, William Gene Mathis and Joseph Fletcher Mathis, all of Panama City Beach; Sister: Sharon Desvousges Hartman (Michael), Tallahassee. Special appreciation goes to the loving support of Cheryl Stonecipher who made it possible for him to stay in the oversized “house that Ed built”. His family, extended family and a multitude of friends will miss him dearly. Ed was a friend to many and a stranger only to those he never met. A Celebration of Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, October 29, at 1:00, at the American Legion Hall, 619 Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach, 32168. Dress is casual, Gator attire preferred. Bring your favorite Ed Tall Tale to share. Donations may be made in Ed’s name to NSB CAPS Scholarship Program, New Smyrna Beach High School, 1015 Tenth Street, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168.
