Obituary

Esther Bradberry King, born February 20, 1936, died on March 23, 2024, in Winter Springs, FL, predeceased by her husband, Erwin Thomas King. Her parents were Wiley Bradberry of Selma, North Carolina (deceased) and Nellie Bradberry of Selma, NC (deceased) and sister Irene Langdon of Smithfield, NC (deceased).

Esther is survived by her two sons and their families: Erwin Thomas King Jr., his wife Katie, and their two daughters, Laura and Hope; and their younger son Robert Jeffrey King, his wife Jana, and her granddaughters, Lacy and Melissa; and two nieces, Gerry Wakeland of Longview, Texas and Barbara Mozingo of Parkville, Maryland.

Esther graduated from Selma High School. She then attended Rex Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as an R.N. in 1957. Just prior to graduation, Esther met and married Tom King. She worked as an R.N. at several hospitals in North Carolina and Georgia during their various assignments with the Federal Aviation Administration. Esther and her husband Tom retired to Leeward Air Ranch in Ocala, Florida in 1992.

One of the highlights of Esther’s retirement years was her and Tom’s weekly attendance at Bible study at the Holy Land in Orlando every week for many years and attending weekly worship service at Faith Presbyterian Church. The Bible literally came to life on their trip to Israel, which was truly one of the high points in both of their lives, to see where Jesus lived. Esther was a very strong Christian believer and has long looked forward to seeing Jesus face to face.  She also served as a Hospice volunteer in Ocala, Florida for over 20 years.

Interment will take place at the Bushnell National Cemetery at a later date.

Esther was our cross the street neighbor, and she and Tom were one of our first neighbors at Leeward Air Ranch to welcome us to the neighborhood. My fondest memories of Esther are watching her take meticulous care of her flower gardens. She is missed.

Esther and Tom were our wonderful across-the-street neighbors at Leeward Air Ranch. I especially enjoyed riding in a carpool with Esther to the weekly Ladies Luncheons. It was also such a treat to talk with her when she was out caring for her beautiful flower beds. She was one of my special “role models”, and I will never forget her!
