Obituary

Just sit right back and you will hear the tale of an amazing man!

Gary Tschantz was truly an amazing man who exuded light, kindness, goofiness and love. He had a way of listening, connecting and of making you laugh that made everyone he met love him.

Gary grew up in Canton, Ohio with his parents Jerry and Pat and his brothers Tom and Jim. He spent much of his childhood sled riding down dangerously large hills and cultivating a love of 60’s TV shows that has since been passed down to his granddaughter. At 17 he met the love of his life, Lisa who he spent the next 45 years with everyday in a truly amazing romance that showed both of his children what love looks like. They would ride bikes, walk, swim and laugh everyday for the next half a century.

Gary loved many things in life including the Minions, Country Wine, Gilligan’s Island and embarrassing T-Shirts but his true passion in life were his children. Nick and Sam were the light of his world and he would support them and be there for them every time that they would ever need him. He taught them how to fix things including showers, he went to every swim meet and Tae Kwan Do tournament and showed his love through small actions like watching for the bus from the 2nd floor of the house everyday so his little girl didn’t have to wait out at the bus stop. When Sam and Nick found their own spouses Dan and Kaily, he never treated them as anything less than his own Son and Daughter and both Dan and Kaily loved him like a father.

It would be absolutely impossible to explain what a good Papa he was to his three Granddaughters: Charley, Teddi and Holli. They received more love, quality time and smiles in a few short years than most grandchildren receive in 40 years. His ability to make everything from getting a vaccine to watching a Cocomelon seem like a hilarious fun activity is truly amazing. His wind the thumb trick, magic math fingers and silly stories will be passed down for generations.

Besides his family, Gary had many accomplishments in life including purchasing a Pig Farm, being the Dean of Walsh College for 20 years, serving one year as President of his Condo Board, visiting all 50 States, 40 countries, 5 Continents and 6 of the 7 Wonders of the World, crossing Wertz Avenue in the dark and he once saw a helicopter crash into the ocean. He loved Jim Beam, Cleveland Sports, Monk and M.A.S.H., living life to the fullest and his family.

Gary’s example of deep devotion and love for family, adventure, goofiness and kindness are a true light that can never be replaced and will never be forgotten by anyone that met him.

    Dear Tschantz Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I was a student of Gary's at Walsh and he inspired me to teach there after finishing my MBA. He was a remarkable person that touched so many - he will be greatly missed but lives on through all of the lives he impacted so positively. I hope your memories bring you some comfort during this difficult time.

Gary was truly a special person who was loved by so many. He will be missed by all who knew him. I find myself thinking of him often and reflecting on his exuberant, friendly personality. I know that he thought of my daughter, Kaily, as his own and fostered a wonderful relationship with her and her children, Teddi and Holli. I am so very sorry for the abrupt loss of Gary and the void it has most certainly created in the lives of those who were closest to him. My heart goes out to each and every one. We are here for you.

Gary has a way of just being awesome. Everyone was happy when Gary was around. My heart is broken for Lisa, Nick, Kaily, Sam and Dan and all of their family. We will always cherish every memory we have with Gare. He made something as silly as reading a dinner menu something fun for the kiddos when they were getting cranky. We will have many tributes to him as we live our day to day lives and he is thought about often. It is a blessing to have known Gary. We all loved him.

Claudia and I are shocked about this loss. Gary was such a fun guy to be around. And man did he know his sports!

For the years that he ran our group trivia each Monday night, it was something we looked forward to all week.

We just saw Gary and Lisa a couple weeks ago. And we would see them nearly every day walking hand-in-hand along, A1A, true role models of a healthy, devoted life style.

Our deepest condolences to the family.

Quite a shock to hear from Ohio friends that Gary had died and so young. I had the pleasure of working with him during his years at Walsh University in No. Canton, OH. He directed the IDEAL Program designed to help adult students complete their BA studies. Everyone had a friend in Gary. He was most professional in providing the students with an atmosphere that working adults needed to attend classes. What joy he expressed when his students walked the stage. Thank you, Gary, for providing such an experience even for us faculty and staff. Do enjoy an eternity of peace and everlasting joy.

I cannot think of another person who made me laugh so much every time I saw him. We enjoyed every minute we spent time with Gary and Lisa. He truly loved his family and our thoughts and prayers are with them all!

Typing out this tribute on a computer is not how I thought I would say good-bye to my beloved cousin Gary. I figured at some point down the road I'd visit him one last time in some nursing home, either in Florida or back here in Ohio, him in a wheelchair with a blanket over his legs and me with my walker barely able to move around. I pictured him harassing me about how I still had hair when his went away a long time ago; reminding each other of our joint experiences of long ago when we were kids and played and hung out together at family gatherings; laughing at our parents and grandparents; and just enjoying each other's company one last time. "Gare" was indeed the life of the party; always in a good mood; always up for something interesting and fun; always ready to laugh. When I was a kid and my Tschantz cousins came over to the house, or we met them at somebody else's house, it was special. He and I were the two closest boys in age in the extended family, so we had a lot of fun together, sometimes at our house, sometimes at theirs, sometimes at our aunt and uncle's house in New Philly, and best of all at Grandma and Grandpa Tschantz's house on Broad Avenue in Canton (They had this cool attic where we could all get away from the grownups!).
While I wish I could have said goodbye in person, I am comforted that, in his last moments, he was holding Lisa's hand. If you could ask him, I am certain he would say that being with her when he left us was exactly what he would have wanted.
We miss Gare, and are praying for strength and comfort for Lisa, Nick and Sam, and the grandkids.
    Goodbye, Gare.
"And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
    --Dave

My big brother Gary was the life of the party, the comedian that was always on, yes, but he was also so much more. He was deeply devoted to family and could always be counted on. The best comedy show and 63 yr party is over and we are sad, but more importantly, we ache for the everlasting loss of the family rock and everyone's best friend until we are joined again. I look forward to hugging Gary again at the party at the end of the world. May God's face shine upon you for all eternity. Your "little" brother, Jim

My love and prayers to Lisa and her family. Gary was always such a great man who showed very openly show Ed how much he loved Lisa and all of his family. He continually gave of himself. I am so glad of having the privilege to know such an incredible man. Your spirit will remain with all who knew you.

Reading Gary’s Obituary actually made me smile, almost laugh. It truly brought back memories of the times he made me laugh out loud when we’ve been together. Lisa and Gary were such inspiration to me when my husband passed and always made me feel welcome and part of their sweet family . Their love for each other was a beacon of light to others and I know he will be missed in a big way. My prayers are certainly with Lisa and her family. I was blessed to know Gary.

He will forever be a part of each of us, for his love, kindness, laugh and generosity have touched us all deeply! I look forward to the day when we are all joined together again my dear brother! My love to all of you! Always and forever, Andy
