Obituary
Helmut passed away peacefully in the care of the wonderful staff at the Halifax Hospice Center in Ormond Beach from a combination of bone cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and lastly a stroke.
Born in Kiel, Germany but grew up and schooled in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Helmut immigrated to New York in 1957 as a crew member of the passenger ship “The Berlin”. He married Inge (nee Stratmann) who passed away in 1985 and they have 2 children.
He proudly served 2 years in the US Army, mainly at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana.
Helmut worked for KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines from 1961 to 1993 at JFK airport and O’Hare airport. Married Hilma (nee Schmidt) in 1987. They moved from Chicago area to Ormond Beach in 1997.
In his youth, he loved to play soccer and later turned to golf. He is survived by his wife, Hilma, daughter, Heddy (with her extended family in Wisconsin), son Michael and stepson Owen (with their extended families in Illinois). He is also survived by his brothers, Erhard in Germany and Werner in Puerto Rico, brothers-in-law, Heino in California, Emil in New York and sister-in-law Ursula Janssen (nee Stratmann) of Ormond Beach.
He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, one great grandson, golfing buddies, co-workers of KLM around the globe and so many wonderful friends.
Helmut was predeceased by his brother, Hans Otto, sister, Brigitte and step-daughter, Heidi.
Our family would like to mention a special thank you to the following doctors who valiantly tried to extend his life: Dr. Christopher Alexander, Dr. Lorenzo Phan and Dr. Benjamin Peck.
