Obituary

Henry (Hank) W. Haas
June 13, 1934 – September 19, 2023

Henry W. Haas, 89, of Port Orange, Florida died on September 19, 2023. He passed away peacefully in the care of Halifax Hospice Care Center, Ormond Beach.

Hank, as he was affectionately known, was an avid sportsman. In high school he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He had a lifelong love of football and could be found any given Monday, Thursday or Sunday hollering at his television screen offering the benefit of his wisdom to players and coaches alike. This love of sport and mentoring of players also extended to hockey. You would not want to get in his way while he was virtually coaching his favorite teams from his Lazy Boy in the living room. Before moving to Florida, he also loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his 5 sons.

Hank’s was a life well lived. He had an active social life and loved to hold court at his favorite watering hole, Our Deck Down Under in Port Orange. If you were lucky enough to know him, or luckier still to be his friend, you could find him anchoring down the corner of the bar on the stool that bore an engraved plaque with his name. Staff there were family and The Corner Gang will never be the same without him.

Hank is survived by his sons Rick (Peggy) Ormond Beach, Fl., Jeff (Candy) Myrtle Beach, SC, Henry Jr, Oriskany, NY, Hal (Yvonne) Whitesboro, NY, and daughter-in-law Danielle, Oswego, NY and their children, grandchildren and, yes, great-grandchildren along with his many nieces and nephews. Hank was one of 9 children. He is survived by brothers Gary (Judy) and David (Candy), and sisters Dawn Inman and June Eberly (Neil). He was preceded in death by his parents James and Marie Haas, son Heath Haas, brothers Sonny, Richard and Robert, and his sister Donna Lee.

Hank’s career was dedicated to law enforcement and security. He was a firefighter at Griffiss Air Base from 1958 to1962, a Lieutenant with the Oneida County Sheriff’s department from 1962 to 1980 and a Security Coordinator at the New York State Power Authority from 1980 to1993.

A gathering of remembrance for friends and family will be held October 4, 2023 at the Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society at 620 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange, FL 32127 from 11:00am to1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hank’s honor to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Foundation of America.

Going to the Deck won’t be the same. Hank was always at the corner of the bar. He always played ‘Help Me Rhonda’ on the juke box when I was there. A lot of folks might call him ornery, but he was always funny and made me laugh every time I saw him. Hank, may you rest in peace. You fought a fierce fight. Hugs and prayers to the family.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Hank, I have heard many stories from Rick and Peggy about his “so cranky and ornery personality that you couldn’t help but love him.” I know he was indeed loved by many. Rest in peace, Mr. Haas.
