Obituary
It has always been about the dash. The dash between when he was born and when he died. His 94 year dash was truly wonderful. He was an only son born to British parents James and Isobel, in Montreal, Quebec, proud father of his blended family of 7, grandfather of 15, great-grandfather of 11, great-great grandfather of 10, celebrated chemist, world traveler, snow skier, retired as Vice President of International Manufacturing at Upjohn, and life-long member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a Canadian snooker and curling aficionado, senior tennis player, one-mile-a-day walker, ate baked beans for breakfast, his salad after his meal, and one glass of wine with every dinner.
Dave loved conversation and was admired for his sharp wit, strong opinions, and ability to recite complete sonnets that he learned while an honors student at McGill University.
He was the president of his ski club and organized trips for 45 years, until he quit skiing at 80, a feat unto itself. A man who loved many cultures, he chaired the International Exchange Club of Kalamazoo, and after hosting many events had collected every spice imaginable, some that even came with critters. Jazz was a big part of his life and he enjoyed sharing that love with others by running the Jazz programs at his church.
Dad leaves behind his wonderful partner Kay, and his grieving children who had hoped he was going to live forever, Lyn (Ken), Ron (Karen), Cheryl, Wendy (Rob), Mary, Jamie, and Sally (Gary), all the grands, nieces and nephews, many friends and acquaintances.
Inurnment is at the columbarium at First United Methodist Church of Sarasota, 104 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota FL 34236. A memorial service will be held there on Saturday, May 4 at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, please think of attending a jazz event in his honor.
