Obituary

Janet Peterson Assunto

83 yrs. of age

Passed away on April 11, 2024, at home from pancreatic cancer.

Janet was born on July 3rd, 1940, at Yale New Haven in Connecticut to Frank and Eleanor Peterson.

She married her High School sweetheart, Jack Assunto on September 29th, 1962.  She was a graduate of West Haven High School and retired from a career as a bank teller.  She volunteered for several years with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Janet is a former resident of West Haven, Terryville, and New Milford Connecticut.  She had been a resident of Maple Leaf Golf & Country Club for the past 27 years.

Janet was an avid reader and blessed with the “gift of gab” whether a stranger or a friend.  She loved to tell “tall tales” presented as truth.  She was a skilled ceramic painter, a great card player, and dancer. She loved sports arenas, ballfields and was knowledgeable about all aspects of whichever game she attended.  She was a fierce fan-especially at hockey games.

She authored many skits, performed a stand-up routine, and acted with the Merry Makers.  Janet also played the washboard and sang with Annette and the River Cats for several years at the Nav-a-Gator in the early 2000s.  Her most recent hobbies included coloring with colored pencils, playing games on her tablets/computer, and shopping Amazon.

Janet was full of life, wit, passion, and incredible stories. She could out-shop the best of us and befriend anyone and everyone, especially in the grocery store.  She absolutely loved her kids and grandkids.

She was devoted, dedicated, and had deep compassion for others. Incredibly well read (should have been on Jeopardy), she could debate any topic (and perhaps be a wee bit stubborn at times), but she had an open mind and would change her position on many different things as she and the world evolved around her.

Janet is survived by:

Husband, Jack Assunto of Port Charlotte, FL; son John Assunto and daughter-in-law Kathryn Assunto of Connecticut; daughter Jayanne Sindt and son-in-law Jim Sindt of Port Charlotte, FL; Grandchildren Nicholas Assunto, Natalie Assunto and Giovanni Assunto of Connecticut; Brother David Lanni and sister-in-law Linda Lanni of Connecticut.

Janet is predeceased by sister Fran Woods and beloved cats Maggie, Sydney, and Jessie.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am, Monday, April 29th, 2024, at St. Charles in Port Charlotte followed by Internment of Ashes. A Celebration of Life will also be at 1:30pm at the Maple Leaf Golf and Country Club in the Queensway Banquet building.
