Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful daughter, Jessica Lauren Hughes. Jessica passed away at her residence in Ormond Beach on October 26, 2021, after succumbing to the Malignant Melanoma that she battled courageously for eleven years. She passed knowing she was loved by family and friends and all that were inspired by her.

Jessica was raised by Mother, Jacqueline Raymond Bertelson and then together with her stepfather, Bob Bertelson after they were married in 2004 in Miami, Florida.

Jessica graduated Cum Laude from Florida State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in English Rhetoric and Minor degree in religious studies. She worked as an Academic Assistant at Thompson University and as a Teaching Assistant in the English Dept at FSU while she attended college. Jessica went on to work as a Government Operations Consultant for the State of Florida but aspired to pursue a career in writing. She also had a passion to be a minister that catered to all religions and walks of life. She was a Worship Leader for Christ Fellowship Church in Miami, Fl when she was only 13 years old and attended a mission trip to Seattle when she was 15. Jessica had a thirst for knowledge of religions and spent time in Synagogues and meditating in Buddhist Temples.

Jessica was a loving daughter, intelligent, hilarious, compassionate, spiritually wise beyond her years. She shared her love for reading with her Nonnie Kay, as well as dancing, music, having deep conversations with friends of all ages. She loved comedy and hanging out with her friends. She loved animals and was blessed with her dog’s, Tess and Mia that both helped her along her journey.

Jessica was never afraid to stand up for equal rights and was instrumental in supporting friends and others to come out without shame or fear. Her motto in the last years of her life, was “To just be honest”. She was on the committee for PRIDE during and after she graduated from FSU.

Jessica was not just a Warrior for her brave eleven-year fight with cancer, Jessica was a Warrior in LIFE and will be greatly missed by her family and friends and all of those that were touched by her light. Her light will shine forever in our hearts.
