Obituary

John Warren Hughes, of Ocala, Florida, passed away on April 17, 2024, at the age of 71. He was born on March 13, 1953, in Port Jefferson, N.Y. John was a loving father, grandfather (Deda), coach and teacher.

John had a passion for teaching and coaching throughout his career. He taught Biology, Math, Science and Physical Education at various institutions including North Marion, Gainesville HS and Forest HS. He later transitioned to coaching Women’s Basketball. First at CFCC, then onto Division I at McNeese State University, University of Akron, University of South Alabama and University of South Florida.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, John enjoyed spending time engaging in sports, hanging out with friends, cruising with Julio and playing stick ball games on
Thanksgiving. Softball was also among his favorite pastimes.

John is survived by his daughters Lindsey Lyon (Nate), Alison Hughes (Taylor), Jaci Hughes (T-Bone), brothers Matthew (Megan), Warren, Paul, nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved grandchildren, Ruby and Jett Lyon, who brought immense joy to his life. Dee (Dyer) McCumbee and Mary Ann (Bowles) Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Warren Brown Hughes and Mother, Adele Kathryn (Gibbons) Hughes.

A celebration of life for John will take place on June 29th, 2024 between the hours of 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm.  For location we kindly ask you to please email his family at
